Freudian Analysis & Review: Victor Frankenstein Objective: To review what we know about Victor Frankenstein, today your group will analyze him using Freudian terms. New and Improved Analysis tool: Freudian Defense Mechanisms!

Review: Id, Superego, Ego Which motivates Victor? Examples?

Freudian Defense Mechanisms New Information! The ego… driven by the id confined by the superego …struggles to master its task of bringing about harmony among the forces and influences working in and upon it. In order to deal with conflict and problems in life, Freud found the ego employs a range of “defense mechanisms.” Defense mechanisms operate at an unconscious level and help ward off unpleasant feelings (i.e. anxiety) or make good things feel better for the individual.

Your Task: Partner Pairs Using evidence from the first eleven chapters of the book, on white paper, draw and annotate VF (make him look like the person you think he really is) with annotations containing your unique psychological analysis of his personality and choices thus fra. Use paraphrased or quoted evidence from the text to show your Freudian Analysis of specific incidents—what motivates (id, ego, superego) and what “protects” (defense mechanisms) victor? A Macbeth example is on the next slide

Finally, her undeniable superego drives her to her end… Macbeth Freudian Analysis Example: Which incidents from the play support this analysis? Macbeth: Id-driven Lacks superego development Denial Projection Displacement Lady Macbeth: Id-driven Initial ego failure Denial Later, regression Finally, her undeniable superego drives her to her end…
