During the Industrial Revolution, many Americans moved to cities for jobs and an urban middle class developed.

To ensure that there would be workers for the factories, the U. S To ensure that there would be workers for the factories, the U.S. government placed few restrictions on immigration.

“New” immigrants came from Southern and Eastern Europe, China, and Japan.

Most immigrants settled in industrial cities of the Northeast or Midwest, where factory jobs were available.

This unlimited immigration was opposed by labor unions and nativists.

Pressures from these groups led to the U. S Pressures from these groups led to the U.S. government putting limits on immigration by the late 1800s.

Examples of U.S. government limits on immigration included the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act and the “Gentleman’s Agreement” with Japan.
