Rule 1 - The Game Attack your opponents’ basket, defend your own basket Score sheet: anyone not listed on the score sheet prior to the start of the game can not be added to the team roster However, for high school basketball we must use our discretion. The goal is to make coaches more responsible and not leave it up to us to correct their mistakes. Check with the scorer at the 10 minute mark and make sure each line-up is confirmed, starting 5 identified and scoresheet signed.

Rule 2 - Court and Equipment The centre line is part of the back court The three-point line is part of the two-point area The no-charge semi-circle lines are part of the no-charge semi-circle areas Teams shall use the small NCAA rectangle key and not the trapezoid key unless the trapezoid key is the only key available

Rule 2 - Court and Equipment The front, sides, top and bottom of the backboard shall be considered in-bounds Only the back of the backboard and its supports shall be out-of-bounds The ball may legally pass over the backboard in either direction without penalty

Rule 3 - Teams Players: on the playing court and entitled to play Substitutes: not on the playing court but entitled to play Excluded Players: committed 5 fouls and no longer entitled to play Substitutes become players when beckoned onto the playing court or making their request to the scorer during time-outs and intervals of play During intervals of play, all team members eligible to play are considered as players

Rule 3 - Teams All numbers are legal Undergarments: T-shirts are legal but they must be the same color as the Team’s jersey Sleeves, leggings or spandex are permissible (colour is not an issue) Religious head gear is permitted Religious or medical bracelets/necklaces are permitted but must be covered Hair accessories and jewellery are not permitted

Rule 3 - Teams Injuries: Wait for the injured player’s team to be on offense if possible, but stop the game immediately if a safety issue If the injured player cannot continue within ~15 seconds or receives treatment, he must be substituted Any player who is bleeding must be substituted If the injured or bleeding player recovers during a time-out, he may continue to play

Rule 3 - Teams Coaches may approach the scorer’s table only when the ball is dead and the game clock stopped Only one coach may remain standing at any one time They must remain within their team bench area The assistant coach shall not address the officials

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Intervals of Play: Prior to the start of the game, between periods, half-time, and between any extra periods Playing Time: Begins when the ball leaves the official’s hand(s) on the opening jump ball or when the ball is placed at the disposal of the thrower-in at the start of any period other than the first period Each team must have 5 players to start the game

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Home team shall have the choice of team benches For the 1st half, teams shall warm-up and shoot into the basket furthest from their team benches For the 2nd half, teams shall switch baskets and shoot into the basket that is closest to their bench Teams shall continue shooting into these baskets until the game ends

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Length of Periods (High School Modification): Juniors and lower: 8 minute quarters, one minute between quarters, 8 minute half time, 3 minute overtime period(s) Seniors: 10 minute quarters, one minute between quarters, 10 minute half time, 5 minute overtime period(s) Note: Half time intervals may be shortened at any time but only by the event organizers

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Live Ball: When the ball leaves the official’s hand(s) on the opening jump ball When the ball is at the disposal of the free-throw shooter When the ball is at the disposal of the player attempting the throw-in

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Dead Ball: When any field goal or free throw is made When an official blows the whistle when the ball is live When a free throw misses the ring When the game clock sounds to end any period When the shot clock sounds while a team is in control of the ball ** No relation to whether the game clock is running or stopped.

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations The ball does not become dead when: The ball is in flight on a shot and an official blows his whistle, the game clock signal sounds, or the shot clock signal sounds A player commits a foul on an opponent already in the act of shooting

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Location of a Player: Determined by where he is touching the floor While he is airborne, he retains the same status he had when he last touched the floor (includes the boundary line, centre line, 3-point line, free-throw line, lines delimiting the restricted area and lines delimiting the no-charge semi-circle area) Location of an Official: Determined in the same manner as that of a player When the ball touches an official, it is the same as touching the floor at the official's location

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Jump Ball (Held Ball): Occurs when one or more players from opposing teams have one or both hands firmly on the ball so that neither player can gain control without undue roughness Example: A1 jumps with the ball and is legally blocked by B1. Both players then return to the floor with both players having one or both hands firmly on the ball Ruling: Held ball – AP arrow.

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Other Jump Ball Situations: Ball goes out of bounds and officials in doubt/unsure as to which opponent last touched it Double free throw violation during unsuccessful last or only free throw Live ball lodges between the ring and the backboard Ball becomes dead when neither team has control All periods other than the first are to begin

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations AP Arrow Begins: When a team gains in-bounds possession from the opening jump ball (first quarter) When the ball is at the disposal of the player taking the throw-in AP Arrow Ends: The ball touches a player on the playing court The team taking the throw-in commits a violation A live ball lodges between the ring and the backboard during a throw-in

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations How the Ball is Played: With the hand(s) only and may be passed, thrown, tapped, rolled or dribbled in any direction A player shall not deliberately kick the ball or strike it with the fist However, to accidentally come into contact with or touch the ball with any part of the leg is not a violation

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Control of the Ball: Team control starts when a player is in control of a live ball by holding or dribbling it or has a live ball at his disposal Team control continues when a player of that team is in control of a live ball and when the ball is being passed between team-mates Team control ends when an opponent gains control, the ball becomes dead, or the ball has left the player's hand(s) on a shot for a field goal or for a free throw

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Player in the Act of Shooting: Shot vs tap vs dunk Begins when the player starts the continuous movement normally preceding the release of the ball and, in the judgement of an official, he has started an attempt to score by throwing, tapping or dunking the ball towards the opponents' basket Ends when the ball has left the player’s hand(s) and, in the case of an airborne shooter, both feet have returned to the floor

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Goal: When Made and Its Value: The value of a field goal is defined by the place on the floor from where the ball was released. A try for goal released from the 2-point field goal area counts 2 points; a try for goal released from the 3-point field goal area counts 3 points The game clock must read 3 tenths of a second or more for a player to gain control before shooting on a throw-in or free throw rebound (only taps or direct dunks if 2 or 1 tenths of a second on the game clock)

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Goal: When Made and It Value (Cont.): A goal is credited to the team attacking the opponents’ basket into which the ball has entered Accidental scores in one’s own basket counts two points to the captain of the opposing team Deliberate scores in one’s own basket are violations and shall not count

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Throw-in: Taken at the place nearest to the infraction or where the game was stopped in most cases, except directly behind the backboard Taken at the centre line at the beginning of all periods except the first and after free throws for technical, unsportsmanlike, and disqualifying fouls Taken at the free throw line extended after a disallowed basket or a shooter violation on the final free throw

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Throw-in (Cont’d): Taken at the front court throw-in line opposite the scorer’s table after a time-out called by the offensive team from their backcourt with 2 minutes or less on the game clock in the 4th or extra periods Taken at any place behind the endline after one’s opponents score a field goal or final free throw

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Throw-in (Cont’d): After the ball is at the disposal the thrower-in, he shall have 5 seconds to release the ball The thrower in may not move greater than 1 meter laterally, but may move backwards as far as circumstances allow The other players may not come closer than 1 meter to the player taking the throw-in when the throw-in space has less than 2 meters behind the boundary line

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Time-out: Each time-out shall be one minute in length, with a warning horn after 50 seconds Time-outs shall not be shortened by either team A time-out opportunity begins when: For both teams, the ball is dead, the game clock is stopped, and the officials have ended their communication with the scorer’s table For both teams, after a successful last or only free throw For the non-scoring team, after a field goal is scored

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Time-out (Cont.): A time-out opportunity ends when the ball is at the disposal of the player for a throw-in or the first or only free throw Each team may be granted two time-outs in the 1st half, three time-outs in the 2nd half, and one time-out in each extra period A maximum of two time-outs in the final 2 minutes of the 2nd half

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Time-out (Cont.): Unused time-outs may not carry over into the next half or extra period Time-outs shall be requested by the Head Coach or the Assistant Coach and only through the official scorer Conditional time-outs shall not be permitted

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Substitution: A substitution opportunity begins when: For both teams, the ball is dead, the game clock is stopped, and the officials have ended their communication with the scorer’s table For both teams, after a successful last or only free throw For the non-scoring team, after a field goal is scored with 2 minutes or less on the game clock in the 4th and extra periods A substitution opportunity ends when the ball is at the disposal of the player for a throw-in or the first or only free throw

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Substitution (Cont.): When a substitute enters the game or the player leaves the game, they cannot be replaced or re-enter the game until the game clock starts and stops again Only a substitute may request to enter the game A player who has committed 5 fouls or has been disqualified must be substituted within approximately 30 seconds, or else a time-out (or “B” technical foul if no time-outs remain) will be charged to the offending team

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Game Lost by Forfeit: A team shall lose by forfeit if they are not present, with 5 players ready to play, by 15 minutes after the scheduled game time The score shall be recorded as 20-0

Rule 4 - Playing Regulations Game Lost by Default: A team shall lose by default if, during the game, they are reduced to less than 2 eligible players If the non-defaulting team is ahead at the time of the default, the score shall be recorded as is at the time of the default If the non-defaulting team is behind at the time of the default, the score shall be recorded as 2-0
