Misplaced Modifiers

What happens when you misplace a modifier… Oozing slowly across the floor, Marvin watched the salad dressing. She handed out brownies to the children stored in tupperware. Driving like a maniac, the deer was hit and killed. With his tail held high, my father led his prize poodle around the arena. I saw the dead dog driving down the interstate. He held the umbrella over Janet’s head that he got from Delta Airlines. Although exhausted and weary, the coach kept yelling, “Another lap!”

Misplaced Modifiers A misplaced modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that is improperly separated from the word it modifies/describes. Because of the separation, sentences with this error often sound awkward, ridiculous, or confusing. Furthermore, they can be downright illogical.

Example On her way home, Jan found a gold man’s watch. This suggests that a gold man owns a watch. Instead… On her way home, Jan found a man’s gold watch. Now it is the watch that’s gold.

1. Misplaced Adjectives Misplaced adjectives are incorrectly separated from the nouns they modify and almost always distort the intended meaning. The child ate a cold bowl of cereal for breakfast this morning. The child ate a bowl of cold cereal for breakfast this morning. The torn student’s book lay on the desk. The student’s torn book lay on the desk.

2. Misplaced Adverbs Misplaced adverbs can also change the meaning in sentences. For example: Just John was picked to host the program. Just means only John was picked. John was just picked to host the program. Just means that John was picked now. John was picked to host just the program. Just means that John hosted only the program.

3. Misplaced Phrases Misplaced phrases may cause a sentence to sound awkward and may create a meaning that does not make sense. The problem sentences below contain misplaced phrases that modify the wrong nouns. The dealer sold the Cadillac to the buyer with leather seats. This suggests that the buyer had leather seats, not the car. The dealer sold the Cadillac with leather seats to the buyer. The three bankers talked quietly in the corner smoking pipes. The three bankers smoking pipes talked quietly in the corner.

4. Misplaced Clauses Misplaced clauses may cause a sentence to sound awkward and may create a meaning that does not make sense. The problem sentences below contain misplaced clauses that modify the wrong nouns. The waiter served a dinner roll to the woman that was well buttered. What’s buttered here, the woman or the roll?? The waiter served a dinner roll that was well buttered to the woman. Ralph piled all of his clothes in the hamper that he had worn. Ralph piled all of his clothes that he had worn in the hamper.

Dangling Modifiers A dangling modifier is a phrase or clause that is not clearly or logically related to the word or words it modifies. Unlike a misplaced modifier, a dangling modifier cannot be corrected by simply moving it to a different place in the sentence. Sometimes the dangling modifier error occurs because the sentence fails to specify anything to which the modifier can refer. Looking toward the west, the funnel shaped cloud stirred up dust. This sentence does not specify who is looking toward the west. In fact, there is nothing at all in the sentence to which the modifying phrase ‘looking toward the west’ can logically refer. Since the modifier ‘looking toward the west’ is sitting next to the funnel shaped cloud, the sentence suggests that the cloud is doing the looking.

Correction Method 1 Leave the modifier as it is. Change the main part of the sentence so that it begins with the term actually modified. Looking toward the west, a funnel shaped cloud stirred up dust. Looking toward the west, I saw a funnel shaped cloud stir up dust. Walking to the movies, the rain drenched Jim. Walking to the movies, Jim was drenched by the rain.

Correction Method 2 Change the dangling phrase to a subordinate clause, creating a subject and a verb. Leave the rest of the sentence as is. When nine years old, my mother enrolled in medical school. When I was nine years old, my mother enrolled in medical school. Having been fixed the night before, Pricilla could use the car. Since the car had been fixed the night before, Pricilla could use it.
