Lesson 2 Notes - Adding and Subtracting Polynomials -To add and subtract polynomials Lesson 2 Notes - Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

Definition Polynomial function – a term or a finite sum of terms in which all variables have whole number exponents and no variables appear in denominators or under radicals

Examples of Polynomials 3x – 5 4m3 – 5m2p + 8 -5t2s3

Definitions Degree (of a polynomial) – highest exponent in a polynomial Standard Form (of a polynomial) – terms written in descending order of the exponents from left to right Coefficient – the number in the product of a term

Classification by terms: Monomial – 1 term Binomial – 2 terms Trinomial – 3 terms

Adding and Subtracting Concepts -can be done vertically or horizontally -combine like terms and rewrite in standard form

Adding/Subtracting Poly’s 1. 9x3 – 2x + 1 + 5x2 + 12x – 4 2. (2x2 + 3x) – (3x2 + x – 4)
