The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

In between each meeting RE Subject Leaders been completing their draft of units Southwark and London Primary RE Advisers working on feedback, editing units and bringing coherence to whole syllabus along with additional work on syllabus. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. For Primary schools – to cover Foundation, Key Stage 1 Key Stage 2. 1 unit has a Key Stage 3 part to it as well. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan Syllabus For Religious Education. Content being based on: - A Curriculum Framework for Religious Education in England. (Religious Education Council of England and Wales;) Religious Education In Church of England Schools: A Statement of Entitlement from the Board of Education / National Society Council; Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools Evaluation Schedule; Changes in our communities, the world and society; Keeping in mind “Making a Difference” report and “British Values” agenda and new National Curriculum and The Christianity Project. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan Syllabus For Religious Education. RE Curriculum Design Guidance The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education In this part, we will … Identify and discuss issues in relation to: why new guidance is being offered consider some principles of curriculum planning (based on national guidance from the RE Council of England and Wales) The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

What is the role of the RE Subject Leader? “Give a man fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” What does this mean for curriculum planning? in general? in RE? The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

What are the aims of RE in your schools? nationally? regionally? locally? in your own school? The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

What should be the design principles? These may be defined broadly as: have clarity of purpose ensure balance build in progression The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

The RE Curriculum led by questions? The distinctive features of a question led RE Curriculum are: focus on object of study ‘big’ longstanding questions sequences for progression core beliefs and practices The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

What happens next? For you and for your colleagues: focus on knowledge, understanding and wisdom? importance of religious and philosophical literacy? flexibility of approaches? assessment and progression, with or without levels? Implications for SIAMS? What can we do to help you? The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. Our recommendation: - Throughout the syllabus: - Two thirds Christianity One third other principal world faiths (Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.) This equates to 4 half-term units of Christianity 2 half-term units of the other principal world faiths Schools can decide how to organise this. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. For Primary schools – to cover Foundation, Different for Foundation Stage: - 6 half-term units wider themes that fit in with Early Learning Goals and have a strong Christianity focus, but are flexible enough for other faiths to be included as appropriate to the pupils, school context, etc. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. Christianity Units. KS1 = 4 units of 6 sessions each 4 units of 4 sessions each 4 units of 2 sessions each. KS2 = 6 units of 6 sessions each 8 units of 4 sessions each 8 units of 2 sessions each. includes: - Christmas for each Year Group Easter for each Year group Pentecost and Trinity. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. Other Principal World Faiths Key Stage 1: 2 Faiths to be taught: Judaism (2 half-term units) + Islam or Hinduism or Sikhism or Buddhism The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. Other Principal World Faiths Key Stage 2: Other Faiths to be taught Judaism (1 unit) + Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism (2 units of the 3 remaining faiths not yet studied.) Does mean that 1 faith won’t have a faith specific unit in KS2, but it will definitely be included in thematic KS2 units and could be included in any extra RE activities / opportunities that the school does. The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

New Diocesan RE Syllabus Structure. Thematic (multifaith) Units. Key Stage 2. The Journey of Life and Death; Understanding Faith in . . . Rules and Responsibilities (Bridging / Transition Unit.) (Includes KS3 part.) The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

Areas To Consider When Devising Your School Curriculum Map: School Context (e.g. location, local community etc.) Distribution of Christianity (2/3rds) and Other World Faiths (1/3rd) (e.g. over the course of a year group or key stage?) Delivery of Lessons (e.g. weekly lessons and/or blocked?) Links with School Curriculum Map (Make reference to whole school curriculum map, look for STRONG links) Who Teaches RE? (Class teacher or other member of staff?) The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education

The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education Milestones For Introducing the RE Syllabus In Your School: Key Tasks (Anything arisen from training so far?) Key Conversations (e.g. Head teacher, Senior Leadership Team, RE Link Governor) Presentation to Governors for Ratification (How will this be approached? When?) Staff Training (Full implementation from September 2016) How will the syllabus be made available to staff? (Electronically? Paper copies?) Resource Audit (Who? When?) Review of RE Policy (Any amendments required?) RE Action Plan (Priorities?) The SDBE - Developing Church of England Education
