Reef Trigger Fish By: James H-H

How is the ocean animal suited for its environment? Where does it live? Coral Reef They prefer the tropical and subtropical locations with warmer temperatures. The largest number of them are found in the Indo-Pacific waters. They use the reef to hide when feeling threatened

How and what does it eat? It blows water at the sand to find food. Triggerfish have an oval-shaped, highly packed in body. The head is large, it has strong- jawed mouth with teeth adapted for crushing shells.

How is the ocean animal suited for its environment? Protection: As a protection against predators, triggerfish use its two dorsal spines: The first spine is locked in place the short second spine, and can be unlocked only by depressing the second, “trigger” spine, hence the family name “triggerfish” Triggerfish species can be quite aggressive when guarding their eggs. A male and female blow water on the sandy bottom and set up their egg nest.

Human Impact FACTS: Coral reefs cover less than 0.2% of our oceans but they contain 25% of the world's marine fish species!   Coral reefs are second only to rainforests in biodiversity of species. Triggerfish are known to reduce sea urchin species that destroy reef structure when there are too many.

Future of the Trigger Fish There is no information if the Trigger Fish is in danger of becoming endangered. However, the coral reefs they rely on are. If we don’t stop destroying the fish habitat, then they could be at risk of dying.
