Objectives Examining the factors that lead to migration Resources Sorting activity Ppt Starter Main Plenary Match the word to the definition and picture. Match the definition to the words they have seen Outline the lesson objectives and the aim of the series of 5 lessons on Migration – to create a documentary (B21 style) on the topic of Migration. Each group will be given a specific area to cover and present and we will put the 5 sections together at the end. Both classes have been given the same task so we can compare and contrast the finished projects. Task 1 – sort the cards into chronological order – timeline Illicit from the students the very many reasons for migration and that it is age old and not a recent phenomenon. Task 2 – Sort the cards into the 4 main reasons for migration Feedback and discuss. Task 3 - Connect 4 activity. Give the students the template with the more detailed reasons to migration. Divide the cards between the students in each group. Please against each other to try and connect 4 reasons to migrate – in any direction (horizontals count). Group game on the board also possible to demonstrate. Task 4 – Sorting into the correct quadrant – students now consider the different circumstances which migrants face in the countries they travel to. Extension – if time they different types of migrants Discuss the learning and summarise 10 15 5 H/W Watch the 7min 30 sec video before next class.

What did they like about the documentary? What didn’t they? Critically evaluate it’s effectiveness to inform teenagers. Irish context – emigration (historical context) and recent immigration to Ireland. A discussion – students sharing their experiences. Push/Pull factors – summarise the learning and from the video. Group task – A recent arrival to Dublin – prepare a back story, including push and pull factors and an account of the challenges they faced on arrival. One student per group to ‘act’ out and be interviewed as part of a hot seat activity next lesson.
