Promoting Student Success With Motivation In The Online Environment What are methods that the Instructor and student can come together to create a success learning environment? EDU 601: Ashford University Instructor W. Reeves V. Rochon 11/12/16

Why am I taking online classes Online classes offer flexibility They are designed to assist any type of learner Convenient when there is no time to attend school in person You can do your work from anywhere with internet access Financial aid can assist with online as well as onsite education Before embarking upon online courses, you should think about your reasons for taking online classes versus traditional courses.

Online versus on site education Traditional Onsite Work can be done at any time day or night Collaboration with students and instructor replaces Face to Face Synchronous virtual meetings can bridge gap of separation Self paced work loads Meet at a particular time in person Face to face interaction with students and instructors Commute to location at regular times in various weather Possibly a lot of students, lost, feel like a number not a person One must weigh the pros and cons of the online versus onsite environment. Answers will vary with the person. Online education offers an ability to work on your own schedule and not have to commute.

Preparing for success in the online environment Take a moment to watch this short video to answer the question whether you are or are not ready to begin online education. Graduation Statistics for higher education Statistics of college graduation rates for traditional colleges both Associate and Bachelor degree levels.  The Condition of Education (2009) U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2009 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) http://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/analysis/figures/2011-fig07.asp

Ashford University online graduation rates First year students struggle with keeping up with the pace and requirements of online education. Over 98% of undergraduates take distance courses As students go higher into their educational career, online classes become more successful Unfortunately, graduation rates for online are not as successful during the first year of classes. After the first year, retention rates increase. Ashford statistics demonstrate that the higher the education goes, the graduation rates increase College Results Online, 2016, The Education Trust, retrieved from, http://www.collegeresults.org/collegeprofile.aspx?institutionid=154022

Teacher Responsibilities in the online environment Before class During Classes Provide clear instructions and examples when available Provide grades and feedback consistently and timely Teach with content expertise Be available when students need for any reason regarding academics or for emergencies Provide students with syllabus, explain expectations Create links for introduction of yourself and students Check the website functionality and troubleshoot any issues with tech support Online instructors have to create a warm and supportive virtual environment for their students. They must demonstrate knowledge of the content area and teach using valuable 21st Century skill sets while providing organization, feedback and technology tools.

Evaluate your technology Do I have internet access Do I know how to contact technical support if I need them? Will I have access to the proper equipment to do assignments, activities, discussions and to submit? Make sure to check your equipment and software prior to classes beginning to assure that your equipment will be prepared for class.

What should I do before beginning classes? Step 1 Refer to syllabus and purchase books in advance Step 2 Learn how to log in and find assignment Step 3 Create a calendar and to-do list Step 4 Check email and announcements regularly Order your books for the course Review syllabus and highlight expectations and policies for the course Log in early so you understand how the LMS works and so you can know where to get technical difficulty Find a method to organize yourself either manually or electronically Instructors will send you important information so you should review your email and announcements often Taking steps to prepare in advance of classes will assist in creating success. The better prepared you are, the better you will do.

Students expectations of their Instructor Instructors Should… Build warm relationships with students Instructor should be an expert in the content area they are instructing Does not have culturally, religious or sexual biases toward any students Will be fair and equitable in reference to all school related issues. Provide the materials needed to complete an assignment Offer positive feedback and grades in a timely manner Instruct unknown content Care about and contribute positively towards student success Students must understand that the Instructors have a role to accomplish in an effort to make them successful. Providing this shows that they should hold these Instructors accountable for providing their methods to success.

Tips and resources to promote success Organizational Technical tools Make sure that computer and internet are set up for ease of use Familiarize yourself with the software, website and technical resources Make certain that you use and check your email and calendar regularity Do not procrastinate Create to-do lists Work with a manual or electronic calendar and use the remind function to stay on track with assignments Some tips to prepare you for success are to make sure your hardware and software are functioning properly and you have learned how to navigate through the entire system.
