Insect Biodiversity Study A Graphic Summary of quantitative results, to date* of the Red Pine Pocket Mortality Insect Biodiversity Study based on samples collected from 28 study sites in central and southern Wisconsin red pine plantations, June-August, 2005. Analysis and graphs prepared by Stephanie L. Eastwood, Forest Insect Ecology Technician Prof. Ken Raffa’s Lab University of Wisconsin – Madison Department of Entomology 25 March 2008 *This is a preliminary summary. Final results will include Coleoptera and Hymenoptera family, genus, & species counts gleaned from the taxonomy team’s reports.

Asymptomatic Controls Healthy Red Pine Stands – No real pocket gaps to be “in” or “out” of. Declining Red Pine Stands. PC = Pocket Controls (no root-sever treatment) RS = Root Sever treatment

Note: This graph shows actual totals Note: This graph shows actual totals. The number of samples collected from each site varied. The next slide is the same graph with values labeled.

Asymptomatic Red Pine Plantation Sites (Controls) Declining Red Pine Plantation Sites: Root Sever Treatment (RS) Pocket Controls – no root sever trtmt (PC)

Comparison of Hymenopteran diversity in declining vs. healthy stands. Comparison of Hymenopteran diversity inside vs. outside gaps across all declining stands (RS & PC).

Bars left of the orange line show results for Asymptomatic Control sites—healthy red pine stands with no actual pocket gaps to be “In” and “out” of.
