Unit 6: Public Policy

Public Policy All the “stuff” that government chooses to do or not do Involves making a choice or course of action in regards to solving some problem or issue Who is involved? What are the politics? Who is impacted? What will it cost? How will it impact the nation?

Definitions of public policy by political scientists: Clarke Cochrane: “The actions of government and the intentions that determine those actions…” Thomas Dye: “The outcome of the struggle in government over who gets what…” Eloise Malone: “political decisions for implementing programs to achieve societal goals…” B. Guy Peters: “The sum of government activities, whether acting directly or through agents, as it has an influence on the life of citizens…” E. Wilson: “the outcome of the struggle in government over who gets what…”

Public Policy The things that a government chooses adopt to address a problem.
