«Good local governance» The Municipality of Gjesdal: Placed in the region of Rogaland, close to the city of Stavanger Economically influenced by oil the industry Medium-sized Norwegian municipality – approximately 12 000 inhabitants Approximately 950 employees (760 full time positions)

«Good local governance» Gjesdal is a typical Norwegian municipality, with an organization and services based on: Transparency Trust Well educated and competent labour force High professional standards A system of redistribution of income between the municipalities

«Good local governance» Broad range of public services in accordance with national standards: A variety of health services Social services Municipal planning and development Primary and secondary education Kindergarten Municipal roads Public library, cultural events, public education in music and the arts

«Good local governance» Local Government Act 1837 (formannskapslovene) A fairly autonomous public administration in the municipality with an employed (not elected) administrative leader A multi-party (and non-parliamentary) political system in the municipalities enhancing cooperation between the political parties – the Mayor being everyone's Mayor
