How to analyze political cartoons… LOOK FOR: Symbols Captions Whole Picture Humor & Irony Point of View (position)

Reading with a question in mind… What do Democrats believe about global warming? What do Republicans believe about global warming?

GLOBAL WARMING POLITICAL CARTOONS

GROUP WHITE BOARDS 1) At your table, DISCUSS a possible message for this political cartoon. Then, use a white board to WRITE a caption for the cartoon. You will share it with the class.

Cooperative Activity: Global Warming Political Cartoon 1. In groups of two, plan and then create a political cartoon about global warming (if you think global warming is a serious problem, try to convince others to agree with you….if you think the threat of global warming is being exaggerated and lacks enough proof, try to convince others to agree with you). 2. The cartoon itself should include a picture and a caption showing either dialogue between two characters or a caption that provides commentary to help your audience understand the picture. 3. Finally, on the back or on a separate sheet, write a one paragraph explanation of your cartoon. In the explanation, discuss the following: What is happening in your cartoon? Your “point of view” or “message” (what are you trying to say about global warming?) Your intended audience (who are you trying to reach or convince?) What symbols did you use in the cartoon and why did you use them? Cooperative Activity: Global Warming Political Cartoon 1.
