A Self Teach Tutorial

Take the math out of medicine in three easy steps: Select a weight 2. Select a medication 3. Select a dose Feel free to take this out or change it to “Take the math out medicine in three easy steps”

Select a Weight Zone Selecting a Weight Zone A weight tab or corresponding color must be selected before any medications are displayed. To display adult weight tabs, select the “>kg” tab.

Browse by Category 1. Medication Category Select a category from the panel on the left side of the screen to browse medications by category. Only the most commonly used medications are listed for each category.

Browse by Alphabetical Index 2. Alphabetical List The alphabetical index is a list of all medications in the eBroselow system. Each medication is listed in the left-hand column by its generic and trade names. Every row also contains the complimentary generic or trade names in the right-hand side of the column. The letter tabs reduce scrolling.

Search by Name 3. Name Search The search box will return all indications of each medication that contains the search term. Any part of the generic or trade name can be used as the search term. For example, “succin,” “choline,” “quelicin,” or “anec” will return both indications of succinylcholine. You can also specify a mg dose in the search box to further refine the list. It will show all results that are within 10% of that dose. If you typed “succiny 52 mg”, then it would take you to the Paralysis IM dose, above.

Search by NDC number or Barcode The search box can also be used to find medications using the NDC number on the label. The first eight digits of the NDC number must be entered (with or without hyphens). The search will return the trade name, concentration, production firm, and all indications of the medication. Alternatively, any standard barcode reader can be used to scan the medication label to return the same results.

Selecting the Correct Indication The term Reference is used when the same dose is used for multiple indications.   Other indications which have a different dose for the same drug are identified by a keyword. In the search results for a specific medication, the dosing guidelines and exact mg dose will be provided on the right-hand side.

Virtual Page (V-page) Overview Mixing tool QR code – See separate tutorial. Dosing grid Dosing guidelines, instructions, and pertinent information Can add user notes here if interested Links to related v-pages Logging and Reporting – See separate tutorial. Each v-page has the information to safely prepare and administer the specific indication of the medication.

Dosing Grid Reading the Dosing Grid The concentrations are listed in the first column of the grid. The dosing guidelines are shown above the grid. The dose in mg and the dose in mL to be administered for each concentration is found in the middle column. A custom mL dose can be calculated from mg in the third column.

Mixing Tool Click to open the mixing tool. If there are multiple concentrations in the dosing grid, select your desired concentration. Select the initial concentration from the dropdown menu. Prepare as indicated or type your desired values into the boxes to recalculate.

Dosing Guidelines Each virtual page has relevant preparation, administration, warning, adverse reaction, and y-site compatibility information.

Related Links Links to related v-pages appear under the “Related” header. If your facility has a Lexicomp or Clinical Pharmacology subscription, direct links to the medication page for each site will be present at the bottom.

Exact Weight Dosing Select an exact weight. The dose will be automatically calculated using the selected exact weight. Some medications and indications require an exact weight to calculate the dose.

Flowcharts Click on any of the blue hyperlinks to open v-pages or procedure checklists.

Continuous Infusion V-Pages The header contains the concentration. Opens the mixing tool. The grid displays the dose in mL/hour. A range of doses is displayed in mcg/kg/min.
