Aim:- To construct and fabricate Marx generator for generate impulse high voltage.

Objectives:- The main objective of Marx generator will be to generate high impulse voltage with good efficiency in high voltage laboratory. After finalization of this project, we will observe that how spark is produced by sphere gap. We will also measure time interval of generated spark. For produced spark in sphere gap, discharge time constant will be lesser compared to charging time constant.

Objectives:- By this project, we will observe that if we increase number of stages(n), then discharge time constant will be decreased.

Motivation:- Marx generator has been used in system analysis and many high voltage laboratory but no one has attempted to represent N stage Marx generator and also never attempted a better design and control of the generator. So we are inspired to make this project. We are also motivated by our guide Prof. K.P.Badgujar This project will be helpful for the laboratory of electrical department of this college for future generation to increase practical knowledge.

How does it works? Working principle:- Working :- Working principle of Marx generator is capacitor charging in parallel and discharging in series. Working :- When input D.C. voltage applied, all the capacitor are charged in parallel.

Probable circuit diagram:-

Working:- When D.C. input voltage, with external effect, is increased in comparison to spark gap voltage than all the spark gap gets fire. So, the capacitor are connected in series. Thus, multiplying the input voltage by number of capacitor and generate the impulse voltage in test object. In blasting effect, it is used to prevent the Marx generator for continues arc so the value of resistor depends on the power supply.

Application:- The Marx generator is used for a wide range of applications in different research area and testing purpose Lightning testing on cables and insulators. Material and dielectric testing. Breaking of raw diamonds in mineralogy. Electron injection into nuclear reactors. Short duration luminous flash for ultra high speed photography.

Procedure to be followed:- IEEE paper of Marx generator has been studied. The rating of each component has been decided. The designing model has been analysed. The component has been purchased for this project. This procedure will enable us to develop and fabricate the model of generator.

Requirement of project:- Wooden board Connecting wire Dc-charging set Charging resistors Capacitor Spark gap Wave-shaping resistors and capacitor. Triggering system Voltage divider Protection system

Time planning:- In 7th sem we will work on finalizing the project by implementing the objectives. We will also work on the constraint and analysis of design of the project. In vacation of 7th sem we shall purchase all the component used in the model. In 8th sem, we will materialize the project and submit it by 28th February 2014.

Expected result:- We can generate 1kv impulse voltage using Marx generator.
