What is Methamphetamine? Known as meth, crank, ice, speed, 417, etc. Meth is a stimulant that can be snorted, swallowed, injected or smoked Snorting meth affects the user in approx. 5 minutes Oral ingesting takes about 20 minutes Smoking or intravenous injection takes effect immediately Read slide 6

Addiction rates This is frightening. For anyone ever trying marijuana, there is a 9% chance that they will eventually become addicted to marijuana. For anyone ever trying alcohol, there is a 16% chance that they will eventually become addicted to alcohol. But for anyone ever trying Meth, there is a 90% chance that they will eventually become addicted to Meth. Why is this so frightening? First remember the extremely low recovery rate from Meth addiction, but also these next few slides will show the consequences of Meth use and addiction. Several treatment providers describe meth abusers as "the hardest to treat" of all drug users, as meth affects the pleasure centers of the brain 9

Meth’s effects to the family Children living in meth labs have increased risk for: Physical & sexual abuse Attachment disorder Behavior problems Malnutrition Injuries from lab explosions/fires Overdose on meth left out by parents Exposure to toxic chemicals Substance abuse Teen pregnancy Delinquency Read slide. Ephedrine/ Pseudoephedrine This is your basic cold medicine. At the molecular level, the only difference between Meth and Pseudoephedrine is Meth has one less oxygen molecule. The entire cooking process is designed to remove that one molecule and create Meth. 13

Rotary Club of Salem Based on Missouri Statistics: Will try Meth: 4.3% x 1,800 = 77 people 90% will become addicted to meth = 70 people Friends and family affected: 70 x 15 = 1,035 Hopefully most of those 77 will no longer make the bad choice of trying Meth the first time Changing Lives!!
