Biopsychology 3 AQA A Specification: The function of the endocrine system; glands and hormones.

Nervous system – neural/electrical system – neurotransmitters. Endocrine system – chemical/hormonal system – glands and hormones. These two systems work together.

The endocrine system One of the body’s major information systems that instructs glands to release hormones directly into the blood stream. These hormones are carried towards target organs in the body.

Glands and Hormones Gland: An organ in the body which secretes a particular chemical. Hormones: Chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only affect target organs.

Hypothalamus (HT) Hypothalamus switches off the releasing hormone Releasing hormone Pituitary (P) Stimulating hormone Hormone levels increase Target organ

Gland  hormone  function Pituitary gland – oxytocin - Growth Thyroid gland – thyroxin – cell metabolism rates Adrenal glands – adrenaline and cortisol – fight/flight Pancreas – insulin – metabolism (glucose for energy) Testes – testosterone – male physical characteristics and reproduction. Ovaries – oestrogen and progesterone – female menstrual cycle.
