Political Parties – Lesson 2

National Organization and Convention How are political parties organized? National Committee - representatives from the 50 state party organizations who run a political party -The national chairperson heads this committee. -raises money for presidential elections. -organizes the party’s national convention. -delegates choose the party’s candidates for president and vice president. -Delegates are chosen through presidential primary elections. Caucus - a meeting of political party members to conduct party business

State and Local Organizations The 50 state committees work to elect party candidates to state offices. -governor, state legislator, and others. -The committees also help to elect their parties’ candidates to national offices. At the local level, parties have thousands of city, town, and county committees. Each city or county is divided into election districts called precincts. -precinct -is a geographic area that has a specific number of voters. -could be an entire small town, or it might be a group of adjacent neighborhoods in a large city. Each precinct appoints a captain. -Precinct captains organize volunteers to distribute leaflets and register voters. -also help get voters to the polls on Election Day.

Selecting Party Candidates How are candidates chosen to run in an election? One of the major jobs of political parties is to nominate, or choose, candidates for office. T direct primary- voters choose candidates to represent a party in a general election.

Types of Primary Elections Closed primary - an election in which only the declared members of a party are allowed to vote for that party's nominees Ex- Florida Open primary - an election in which voters need not declare their party preference

Winning a Primary Plurality - the most votes among all those running for a political office Majority - a number that is more than 50 percent of the total
