What was the Black Hand? A secret Serbian society of the early 20th century that used terrorist methods to promote the liberation of Serbs outside Serbia. Opposed Austro-Hungarian Rule. Gavrilo Princip – 19 years old member of the Black Hand. Assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. June 28, 1914.

Leading to War Militarism – European nations engage in a massive military buildup. Alliances – European countries form partnerships to protect themselves.

Leading to War 3. Imperialism – Rival empires seek to keep power. 4. Nationalism – People feel loyalty and devotion to their country or culture.

War Breaks Out After Princip was arrested and identified as a Serbian nationalist, Austria-Hungary decides to punish Serbia. They make a series of humiliating demands of Serbia and then declare war on July 28, 1914. Russia has promised to support the Serbs if they are under attack.
