The Giver Vocabulary for Chapters 1-5

Monday October 17, 2016 The Giver - Vocabulary - Chapters 1-5 Take a copy of the vocabulary sheet from the bin/cart. Write your best guess of the top line for each word. After weeks of potty training my puppy, I had to chastise him for wetting the carpet in the living room. The student was distraught because she studied very hard for her test, but she couldn’t understand why she made a C. Although I have been paying attention in Reading and participating in class, I can’t help feeling a bit apprehensive about the district test. When the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come approached Scrooge, his fear was palpable. Adherence to the rules is necessary in order to avoid being written up on an infraction or a referral.

Denotations for Vocabulary Chapters 1 - 5 Monday October 17, 2016 Denotations for Vocabulary Chapters 1 - 5 chastise – to punish 2. distraught – agitated with doubt or mental conflict 3. apprehensive – viewing the future with anxiety 4. palpable – capable of being touched or felt 5. adherence – maintaining loyalty; following or obeying

Turn to The Giver section of your binder. In bubble letters, title the page, “Utopia.” Copy the following denotation: imaginary place or society considered to be perfect or ideal .

Closure Why is precision of language important in a utopian society? Monday October 17, 2016 Closure Why is precision of language important in a utopian society? How do ideas of a perfect world affect its citizens?

Tuesday October 18, 2016 Bellringer In the bellringer section of your binder, number your paper 1 – 3 and write the underlined word. Write your best guess of the definition. My teacher’s morning coffee has become a daily ritual that she can’t live without. If students don’t adhere to the rules at school, they receive consequences. At the end of each year, school hosts a ceremony to celebrate students and their achievements.

Denotations Ritual – an action of habit or an action of one’s culture. Rules – a set of understood regulations Ceremony – a significant event performed on a special occasion.

Theme vs. Central Idea * A theme is a message about life. * Central idea is what a text is about. *Like theme, central idea takes at least one complete sentence. What are the big ideas in chapter 1 of The Giver? Central idea: Jonas lives in a strict community and shares with his family that he is nervous about an upcoming December ceremony.

Inferring Infer – (past/present) using clues to draw conclusions   about what has or is happening. 1. We know that cats like to swat at fish. 2. We know that piranhas eat almost anything. Therefore, we can infer that the cat stuck his paw in the piranha tank and the piranha ate his paws.

Predicting Predicting – (future) using clues and background knowledge to tell what may happen. 1. We know that the man is stabbing trash. 2. We know that the giant worm’s tail is sticking out the ground. Therefore, we can predict that the man will stab the worm and may be attacked.
