How did I get here? 25 years trying to work out how to respond to complex and interrelated issues in ‘poor’ neighbourhoods. In those years those neighbourhoods have seen little or no impact as a result of many initiatives and programmes designed to help them. I live in Tuebrook in Liverpool

Complex solutions?

What we do? Focus on £ Avoid hard decisions Get the same results? Set vague aims Fail to Performance Manage Often fund more of the same Fail to evaluate Make little or no mainstream impact

GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS, POLICIES AND FUNDING Treasury ODPM DTI HO DoH DWP DfES DEFRA DCMS DfT Sustainable Communities Plan (2003) Prosperity for All (2003) Building Civic Renewal (2003) Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation (1999) Opportunity for All: Tacking Poverty & Social Exclusion (2003) 21st Century Skills: Releasing Our Potential (2003) A Better Quality of Life for All (1999) Sustainable Development Strategy (2004) Transport 2010: The Ten Year Plan (2000) £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ E.g Sustainable Communities, housing, planning, sustainable construction, local government, urban policy, Neighbourhood renewal, social-inclusion. E.g Arts, heritage, libraries, museums, sustainable tourism, lottery, Millennium commission, architecture & design. Local Leaders to bring together all of these concerns to address the needs of their localities

Learning? People see themselves in terms of families, communities and relationships Governments see them in terms of issues, responsibilities and departments. One size doesn’t fit any one. Services only work effectively if they take into account the ways in which individuals engage and see that most problems are complex and interrelated.

We Have the Capacity

What now?

To succeed we need to be seen and heard here We are here
