WELCOME TO TRAIN THE TRAINER!

SEMINAR PURPOSE This training seminar is designed to prepare training leaders to train Rotarians effectively.

SESSION 1 ROTARY TRAINING MEETINGS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Learn about Rotary training meetings, their purposes, and recommended time frames. Know which training meetings are held in your district and when. Understand your role as a training leader.

DISTRICT TRAINING EVENTS Convener District team training seminar Governor-elect Presidents-elect training seminar (PETS) District training assembly District membership seminar District leadership seminar Governor District Rotary Foundation seminar Leadership development program Rotaract leadership training

TRAINER ROLE AT THE MEETING Ensure that participants learn. Follow the training plan for the session. Follow up on unanswered questions. Get permission from training committee for new handouts.

SESSION 2 TRAINING ROTARIANS

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand the characteristics of an adult learner. List the ways that adults best retain information. Understand how to use different training methods.

QUALITIES OF ADULT LEARNERS Realistic Practical Experienced Unique Busy

ADULT LEARNER UNDERSTANDING Adults retain information that is Interesting Applicable to their daily lives Reinforced with interactive activities

SESSION 3 FACILITATED LEARNING

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe the characteristics of a good facilitator. Explain different techniques used in facilitated discussion.

A GOOD FACILITATOR Explores critical issues through questioning Creates a safe environment for participation Keeps group focused and on schedule Neutralizes negative behavior Projects a positive image

EFFECTIVE FACILITATION TECHNIQUES Ask open-ended questions. Pose participant questions to group. Accept all comments without judgment. Correct misinformation respectfully.

SESSION 4 NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Discuss the different types of nonverbal communication. Describe how to adapt your training with respect to nonverbal communication.

TYPES OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION Voice Facial expressions Gestures Silence Eye contact Use of space

READING CUES If participants seem . . . Try . . . Uncomfortable Doing a “getting to know you” activity Uninterested Telling a story, doing an interactive activity, or using gestures for a livelier presentation Confused Giving or asking for examples and allowing for questions Opposed Asking for their thoughts on the subject

SESSION 5 TIME MANAGEMENT

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Identify techniques for managing time. Identify materials you need in a training room.

TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES Begin and end sessions promptly. Distribute handout packets in advance. Prepare flip charts in advance. Ask each group to report its best idea (instead of all of its ideas). Use breaks to energize participants.

SESSION 6 INTERACTIVE TRAINING ACTIVITIES

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand benefits of using interactive activities. Identify techniques for making training interactive.
