PSD: Healthy Living – Challenge 4 This challenge requires you to design a ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ booklet to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle by highlighting the benefits. In order to do this we need to analyze… What constitutes a healthy lifestyle. Look at booklets that organisations have produced to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

A ‘Healthy’ Lifestyle What are the key constituents to a healthy lifestyle? Here is a picture that might give you some ideas… Diet Exercise Personal Hygiene Sleep

Diet What things do you think make up a healthy diet? What things do you think make up an unhealthy diet? A ‘balanced’ diet with emphasis on fruit & veg and carbohydrates An ‘unbalanced’ diet with emphasis on fried, fatty and sugary foods

Exercise You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to exercise! What sort of activities could you do? What sort of activities could you avoid? Going to the gym or an exercise class Team sports Sedentary activities such as watching the TV, playing video games or reading. Jogging/walking or walking the dog

Personal Hygiene As well as diet and exercise, personal hygiene helps with your physical well-being. Brushing your teeth, washing/washing your hands, bathing or showering, brushing your hair, wearing clean clothes.

Sleep For your mental well-being, sleep is just as important as activity! What time do you go to sleep? How long do you sleep for? What do you do before you go to sleep? Do you have a bedtime routine?

Avoid things that are bad for you! What things might need to be avoided to maintain a healthy lifestyle? Alcohol, drugs, smoking and unsafe sex!

Benefits of a Healthier Lifestyle Better muscle tone Lower cholesterol levels and more efficient heart Lower blood pressure Live longer Healthier skin Less likely to pick up infections and diseases Better body image More confident and more sociable Higher energy levels and levels of concentration

Results of an Unhealthy Lifestyle Obesity and blocked arteries Higher blood pressure and lower metabolism Poorer skin More likely to pick up infections and diseases Lower immune system Less confidence / lower self esteem Lower energy levels Lower concentration level and depression Less money and more antisocial Higher risk of a stroke or cancer

Planning your booklet Before designing your own booklet on adopting a healthy lifestyle, you need to… Look at how other people designed their own booklets; Decide who your booklet targets (perhaps specific to teenagers, elderly people or wheelchair users); Map out the key areas you wish to highlight to decide on the number of pages in your booklet and the template (if any) you wish to use.

Useful Links Below is a list of links to useful booklets you may wish to view to see how they have set out their leaflet and what useful information you may want to include in your booklet (dependent upon your target audience). http://www.virtualacademy.org.uk/PSD/HL/Bklt1-eatwellplate-leaflet-2p.pdf http://www.virtualacademy.org.uk/PSD/HL/Bklt2-get-healthy-feel-great-13p.pdf http://www.virtualacademy.org.uk/PSD/HL/Bklt3-get-active-bhf-20p.pdf
