Underlying Assumptions About Preservation: Digital documentary heritage is the primary means of knowledge creation and expression; We have not yet found sustainable economic solutions to achieve "continuity of content"; Preservation is a shared responsibility between public and private sectors; Main parties are Governments, Memory Institutions and the ICT Industry; UNESCO has the convening power to bring these three parties to the table.

Platform to Enhance the Sustainability of the Information Society Transglobally (PERSIST) http://ow.ly/ywZRt

PERSIST created three task forces: Content Task Force Policy Task Force Technical Task Force

Selection decisions to be based on: Significance Availability Sustainability

Challenges/Conclusions A change of mindset is needed. “Attitudinal change has fallen behind technological change. Digital evolution has been too rapid and costly for governments and institutions to develop timely and informed preservation strategies.” (UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Preservation of, and Access to, Documentary Heritage in the Digital Age. November 2015)

Challenges/Conclusions A change of mindset is needed. The ICT industry must be at the table.

Challenges/Conclusions A change of mindset is needed. The ICT industry must be at the table. Governments at all levels must implement appropriate policy frameworks. Finding sustainable solutions to safeguard the digital output of public and private sectors requires close collaboration among governments, industries, memory institutions, creators and consumers.

Sir Arthur Doughty Published in "The Canadian Archives and its Activities", King's Printer, 1924 Of all national assets, archives are the most precious; they are the gift of one generation to another and the extent of our care of them marks the extent of our civilization.
