CURRICULUM NIGHT 5th Grade 2017-2018 Shota Kinjo, Yanhong Ye, Yuanchun Ma,Tracy Kennedy, Katharina Smith, Pam Shembo, Nabil Elhalabi and Lawrence Land.

ABSENCES Coming to school every day is extremely important. It is difficult to catch up if the child has missed several days. Avoid early dismissals! In case of absence, notify the office and the classroom teacher by 8:00AM. Students can report to class starting at 8:00AM. Do not drop off your child at 8:15AM or he/she will be marked tardy!

GRADING Level 3, 4 or 5 on EOG’s: Math, English Language Arts, and Science. Check Power School regularly: No surprises! Create an account with the username and password that you have received. CMS Grading Scale: A 90%-100% B 80%-89% C 70%-79% D 60%-69% F < 60%

GRADING Formal assignment (tests, projects): 60% Informal assignments (quizzes, participation, group work): 40% Missing work: Initial 0 . Highest grade for missing work is 79%. Retake of tests/quizzes is possible for grades under a C. Requested by the student. No extracredit!

DISCIPLINE High expectations. PBIS expectations Rams stickers Quarterly rewards Office referral: Major offenses. 2 office referrals or a suspension: No camp Thunderbird!

MATH EOG: Multiple choice and open-ended questions. 50% of the test is on fractions. Basic Facts: additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions. Practice time tables. Main Concepts: Graphing, multiplications of 2 or3 digits by 2,3 digit numbers, divisions with 2 digits in divisor, volume of rectangular prism, geometry (properties of polygons), measurement within the metric and customary system, additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions of fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions and patterns. Challenge math (Mrs.Hoy): Once a week. Use Mobymax, Dreambox, Ten Marks, Study Jam, Compass Learning when needed.

SCIENCE EOG: 80 questions on the test. Knowing definitions will help. Units: Forces and motion, Matter: Properties and Change, Energy: Conservation and transfer, Weather/Climate, Ecosystems, Human Body Systems, Evolution & Genetics. Study guides available for each chapter. Help your child study every day. (After EOG)

SOCIAL STUDIES Main units: Geography and history of the USA: American Indians and their land, American Indian cultural regions, Explorations, Colonies, Slavery, Life in Williamsburg, Tensions between the colonies and Great Britain, the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, the Constitution, the Bill of rights, the Civil War. Discuss the topics studied in class with your child. Encourage her/him to research more about the subject if interested.

ENGLISH Every day for 60 minutes. Flexible groupings. English teachers: Mrs. Wyotec, Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Melendez, Mrs. Bloch, Mrs. Robison, Mrs. Tita with Herr Land, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Shembo with Mr. Elhalabi. End-of-Grade Test: Students will have to read and answer questions for 2 hours. Students will have to show that they understand poems, recipes, fictional and non-fictional texts. Students should READ every day for at least 30 minutes in English or in the target language. They have time to read during the school day as well.

FIELD TRIPS/SPECIAL EVENTS Discovery Place: Science Reach Programs (Forces and Motion, Ecosystems) at school. Visit to Discovery Place in May for a presentation on human body systems and to visit the museum. Mint Museum: Ancient civilizations Camp Thunderbird: 3 days, 2 nights in March (19-21) Mardi Gras: Dance in February or March. Moving-On Ceremony in June. Celebration of their elementary years.
