Purpose: To introduce your reader to the topic that you are writing about. To provide the reader with all of the necessary information to understand your topic and argument. To make perfectly clear what you are arguing. To provide your reader with a roadmap for the rest of your essay

Parts of the Introduction The Hook The Context (Background) The Thesis (Claim + Reasons)

Hook The Purpose of the Hook is to grab the readers attention and make them want to continue reading. DO NOT ASK A QUESTION INSTEAD: State a thought-provoking idea or realization about the topic. Use a relevant quote from a credible source

Context The purpose: to give your audience all the information they need to understand what you are writing about. Give general knowledge information about your topic. (Who, What, When, Where, and Why)

Thesis Your Claim + Reasons (The Chicken Foot)

Reasons Purpose: To provide a clear roadmap of your essay to your reader. Make sure to address each piece of evidence you will use in your body paragraphs Make sure your body paragraphs stick to the order you established in your thesis. This should be the last sentence in your introduction.
