Brief Guiding Question: Washington Irving's tale of the Headless Horseman has become a Halloween classic, although few Americans celebrated that holiday when the story was new. In this unit, students explore the artistry that helped make Irving our nation's first literary master and ponder the mystery that now haunts every Halloween -- What happened to Ichabod Crane? Guiding Question: How does "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" still capture the imagination of readers today? Write a few sentences about what you know or have heard about the legend. Be detailed.

The proportions of humor and terror in Irving's telling. The "Legend" has gained a reputation as a ghost story over the years, but Irving shaped it as a comic tale of self-delusion leading to its own downfall. Point out "the scary parts" of the story. How scary are they in Irving's hands?

The prominence of the Headless Horseman in the original story. Hollywood has made this frightening apparition the signature image of the tale, yet Irving presents him as a creature of hearsay and foolish superstition who remains indistinct even when he finally appears. Point out descriptions of the Headless Horseman and evaluate his impact on the narrative.

The underlying dynamics of Irving's plot. At its core, the "Legend" is a fabliaux-like tale of rival suitors, with a suggestion that their affections are being manipulated by the lovely whom they both desire. And as in a fabliaux, appetite is the driving force behind the plot, in this case the appetites of Ichabod Crane -- for food, wealth, admiration, and romance. Brom Bones -- Quarrel and merriment Fabliaux – humorous, sometimes vulgar

First reading assignment page 1-4 / Paragraphs 1-13 The first parts of the story: Write a summary for each paragraph (or two if they are short or connected) of the story. Focus on characterization, setting, PLOT in general Exposition = Character introduction, Setting, Background Conflict = Type of conflict, minor conflict, major conflict Write down words that you do not fully understand. Make a presentation of 15 words for each reading assignments, just how we did as a class. Submit by end of week. Characterization 11-10-15 Refer to paragraph 8 on page 3. Reread the part where Ichabod is being described. He described in great detail as having qualities of an animal, a Crane. Assignment: Write a paragraph describing yourself using an animal as a comparison - What animal do you resemble? Why? - Along with physical features, think about animal personalities!

How did Sleepy Hollow get its name? What mood does the setting of this story create? Who do the villagers believe the headless horseman is? How did he lose his head? What do the villagers think he is doing out at night? Why is he said to be in such a hurry? What is Ichabod Crane’s job? What other job did he do to earn a little more money? Where does Ichabod Crane live? Why does he need to be able to have all of his belongings in a small bundle? What are two things that Ichabod would do to make himself useful to the farmers? How does he help the wives?

SECOND READING ASSIGNMENT PAGE 5-8 / PARAGRAPHS 14-26 The second parts of the story: Write a summary for each paragraph of the story. Write down words that you do not fully understand. Why do the women in the countryside think he is an important person? How do the mothers treat him as a result? How do the younger girls respond to him? 9. What subject does Ichabod like to read about? What has increased his interest in this subject? 10. What would happen to Ichabod when he would walk home at night after spending the afternoon reading? How would handle that? 11. What are the two main things that Katrina Val Tassel is known for? What different things does she wear that demonstrate each of these? 12. The author, Washington Irving, says “When he entered the house, the conquest of his heart was complete.” What does the rest of paragraph 24 tell us about why Ichabod liked Katrina? 13. What two things make it difficult for Ichabod to fulfill his goal of marrying Katrina?

11-19-15 More characterization :D Create a character sketch for each of the three main characters present to us so far. Reference the Half a page for each character Brief physical description Descriptions of at least three character traits (personality, way of living, interests.) Evidence that shows these character traits (eg. We know Katrina is capricious because…We know Ichabod is gluttonous because…We know Brom is aggressive because…) On the other half of the page for each description, draw out the character how you imagine him/her to look like. Make sure to include detailed background to really capture the nature of this character.
