Life Changes could be….. Starting a family Caring for someone who is ill Managing the demands of school age children Caring for elderly parents Partner relocation Wanting a different lifestyle
Poll 1 : Where do you stand at the moment? I am thinking about starting a family I need more time with family members who are young, elderly or infirm I want a better or different work/life balance
Objective: re-engineer your working life Take a long hard look at your situation What do you want and need? What would work better for you? What does your ideal situation look like?
Poll 2 : What holds you back? I’m not sure what my company policy is I can’t discuss this with my boss – it would harm my career prospects My boss would never agree Personal issues
What is holding you back? Are these obstacles real or perceived? What do you have to do to address the issues?
Research your options What options does your company offer? How does it work in practice? What does employment law say? Think outside the box
Make the business case Consider the issues your request will create Anticipate the questions your boss will ask Have clear and objective answers ready Be willing to consider other solutions
Hone your negotiating skills Your objective is a win:win solution Be clear what your goal is Map out what you want to say Listen carefully to reactions and objections Consider trades and alternatives Counter with facts and practical suggestions Aim for a workable compromise Do not take it personally
Keep your situation under review Keep an open mind - one day you may wish to step back in
