Abate (v) to become less strong or decrease The hurricane began to abate and the winds died down. Synonyms: decrease, subside, decline Antonyms: rise Also: abating, abated

Deliberate (adj) to do something with intent or purpose He deliberately made me fall. Synonyms: premeditated, conscious, intentional Antonym: accidental Also: deliberately

Egalitarian (adj) based on the belief that everyone is equal and should have equal rights A perfect society would be one that is egalitarian and everyone has equal rights. Synonyms: free, classless, equal Antonym: repressive

Flippant (adj) not being serious about something that other people think you should be serious about The student was flippant about the test and decided to skip studying. Synonyms: frivolous, glib, dismissive Antonym: serious Also: flippantly

Jubilant (adj) extremely happy and pleased because of a success When the basketball player made the winning point, the crowd was jubilant. Synonyms: proud, thrilled, ecstatic Antonym: disappointed Also: jubilee

Scrutinize (v) to examine someone or something very carefully I thought I was under scrutiny when I met my boyfriend’s family for the first time! Synonyms: inspect, examine, analyze Antonym: glance Also: scrutiny

Tenacious (adj) determined to do something and unwilling to stop trying even when the situation is difficult My mom was impressed by my tenacity to finish the marathon. Synonyms: resolute, firm, persistent Antonyms: unsure, wishy-washy Also: tenacity
