National Student Forum – Annual report 2010 If a university is getting this right, a student should be able to say: NSF 5. A positive teaching and learning experience National Student Forum – Annual report 2010 Before I arrived, I knew broadly what to expect I feel supported in my learning My lecturers are trained, supported and incentivised to teach me well I am inspired and challenged Assessment and feedback are used to improve my achievement in future, not just judge my performance to date

“The end of partnership?” Proposals from the NUS 11 November 2010 “Firmer and more direct quality monitoring” OIA plus a “networked ombudsman with a presence on campus” “Power to refer [HEIs] to OFT and the Competition Commission re > prospectus promises > price collusion W.P.: “Hard targets not soft benchmarks” “serious penalties” “Outright ban” on hidden costs and secondary charges “Sector owned has had it’s day” more independent governance [of the sector]. “The end of partnership?”

“The end of partnership?” “The purpose of representation is to secure social, educational and institutional change, large or small, grand or gracious, collectively or individually” [Digby Jacks, President NUS, 1973]. “The end of partnership?”

The Strategic Direction for Oxford Brookes Strategic Goal 1 Student Experience We will be a University which enables a student experience of the highest standard possible Strategic Objectives 1.1 Ensure that learning and teaching is at the leading edge and relevant to contemporary contexts 1.2 Provide an environment where students are proactively engaged in shaping the student experience through opportunities to influence learning and extra-curricula policy, processes and outcomes.

The Strategic Direction for Oxford Brookes Supporting the objectives through: A challenging, relevant and internationalised curriculum to achieve five graduate attributes: Academic literacy Research literacy Personal literacy and self-awareness Digital literacy Global perspectives

Questions on fees 2012 onwards How is Oxford Brookes/ your college/ ACP perceived by current and prospective students in the market overall (rather than subject-specific) terms? What are the factors that characterise Brookes’ market position and does this have implications for setting fees? Re these perceptions and implications different for the subject areas you are responsible for or familiar with? How do you think the market might change as a result of increasing costs to the graduate? What other strategic factors, sector or institutional, does Oxford Brookes need to take into account when making decisions on fees?

Questions on fees 2012 onwards Where do you think Brookes’ relative price position should be in the market? Do you think this position should differ for subject areas that you are responsible for or familiar with? How should Brookes/ your college/ ACP ensure that those on low incomes can still access university? What fee-setting implications do you anticipate? Do these have implications for the widening participation activities that Brookes already engages in?
