Homework- READING RESPONSE Students should read for 20 minutes and write a 5-7 sentence response in their journal. Each journal has an example and directions on the first page. This is a way for students to respond to what they read and use writing skills at the same time. The intentions are for students to read and write every night. Parents can help by either reading along side their child, editing the writing, or modeling what the student wants to write. Students can read books, magazines, or online interactives texts. The more students read and write, they will become stronger readers and writers. Examples:
HOMEWORK-MATH WORKBOOK GO MATH! Standards Practice Book- Every night students will have a page assigned in the GO Math! Standards Practice Book that will reinforce the skills and standards taught that day in math. The book will give one or two examples at the top and then more problems for students to practice. This is intended for students to continue practicing the skills at home. On the back of the page is a review of previous standards and it will spiral as the year goes on. To help your child you can check their work, show them how to show the work, or the students can explain to you have they came up with the answers. Examples:
3rd grade tests: Scholastic Reading Inventory: This is a test created by Scholastic to determine each students’ Lexile Range. We will give the test three times through out the year (beginning, middle, and end). This is a way for teachers to track students’ reading levels and differentiate instruction to meet the students’ needs. Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) & Iowa Test (September 13-21): These are two state required tests that track norms for students by age. This does NOT effect grades in any way. The Iowa Tests meet most state’s requirements for an annual, nationally normed standardized test and offer educators a diagnostic look at how their students are progressing in key academic areas. The Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT) is an aptitude test that measures a student’s general and specific cognitive abilities. This test measures learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal, which are closely tied to academic success. The CogAT is often used to identify gifted and talented students. It helps parents of homeschoolers and private school educators understand their student’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses and learning styles. Georgia Milestone End of Grade Assessment (April 19-28)- The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) is a comprehensive summative assessment program spanning grades 3 through high school. Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in English Language Arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students in grades 3 through 8 take an end-of-grade assessment in English Language Arts and mathematics while students in grades 5 and 8 are also assessed in science and social studies. High school students take an end-of-course assessment for each of the ten courses designated by the State Board of Education.
