Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. S - Specific M - Measurable A - Attainable R - Realistic T - Time Frame

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. S – Specific Example: Bad: Write a paper/article. Good: Write an article on coffee bean production in Vietnam. Goals are no place to waffle. They are no place to be vague. Ambiguous goals produce ambiguous results. Incomplete goals produce incomplete futures.

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. M – Measurable Example: Bad: Increase number of customers. Good: Increase number of customers by 10%. State in terms of percentage increase, unit increase, $ increase.

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. A – Attainable Example: Bad: Climb Mount Everest. Good: Finish 20 kilometer hike. Every goal should start with an action verb: Take, run, quit, finish, eliminate.

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. R – Realistic Example: Bad: Win World Cup Soccer Championship. Good: Join local soccer team. Stretch but not break. A goal has to be something that we can reasonably make “real” or a “reality” in our lives. There are some goals that are simply not realistic.

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. T – Time Frame Example: Bad: Lose weight. Good: Lose 20 lbs by 12/31. Trackable – Every goal needs a date associated with it.

Goals Should Meet Five Criteria S.M.A.R.T. S - Specific M - Measurable A - Attainable R - Realistic T - Time Frame

Setting Smaller Goals Establish time frames for accomplishing goals. Yearly Monthly/Quarterly Weekly Create monthly/weekly plans based upon your goals – “To Do List” – “Objectives”.
