The Menorah is one of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith. It is a candelabrum with seven candle holders displayed in Jewish synagogues. The symbol or emblem of the Jewish people is the known as the Star of David.

Where did Judaism begin? We live here! It began here in Israel

Promises, promises Learning Objective: To enquire into the foundations of Judaism I can explain what a promise is, and give examples of what it can involve I can explain the role of Abraham, I can explain the importance of the covenant and Abraham

Who was the founder of Judaism? The first Jew was Abraham, who lived in the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago and he was called the father of the Jewish people. He belonged to a group of wandering people called Hebrews and believed that there was only one God. The original name for the people we now call Jews was Hebrews.

He spoke to God and made a covenant with Him promising to worship and obey Him. In return, God promised to make Abraham and his family his Chosen People.

Promises Look at your promise packs… Is it easy to keep this agreement? Does the agreement and commitment benefit more than one person? What are the consequences of breaking this agreement? Hand out promise packs on tables and promise pack instructions.

A covenant is a sacred agreement between God and a person or group of people. God sets specific conditions, and He promises to bless us as we obey those conditions. When we choose not to keep covenants, we cannot receive the blessings, and in some instances we suffer a penalty as a consequence of our disobedience.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbPJgVWPpPM – Bible in Animation Explain that Judaism started a Covenant, the Hebrew word for Promise, although it is more than a promise. That this is the foundation of the Jewish faith. Introduce Abraham as the founding father of the Jewish faith, he made a covenant with God. Give students work sheets and explain that together they are going to learn about the start of the Jewish faith. The link on the slide takes you to a you tube video on Abraham, if the internet is down there are copies on DVDs but its from a video and so can be quite grainy!! If this is not an option page 32-34 in Religions to inspire: Judaism also has the info you need!

Why is Abraham important to Jews? Give out post it note to students, this is the plenary and then the start of next lesson,
