Placing Ex-Offender Populations into Jobs Welcome to Today’s Webinar Placing Ex-Offender Populations into Jobs Facilitator: Susan Golonka Director, Human Services Program National Governors Association Center for Best Practices

Placing Ex Offenders Approximately 65 million adults in the United States, or one out of every four, have a criminal record. In general, males who are formerly incarcerated work nine fewer weeks and earn 40 percent less each year than their counterparts without a criminal record

Innovative Approaches your peers are trying: Promising Practices Innovative Approaches your peers are trying: Reviewing state and local statutes to dispel any misconceptions on statutory prohibitions regarding hiring ex-offenders; Promoting the skills, formal degrees and certificates of ex-offenders in order for employers to understand the value of hiring individuals with a prior conviction – this also involves helping ex-offenders build functional resumes which focus on skills and knowledge, rather than employment history; Conducting 30 day, 60 day, and 90 day follow-up meetings with employers after an ex-offender has been hired to resolve any potential issues and to provide case management services to the individual; Hosting annual recognition events that create positive ripple effects among ex-offenders, their families, employers, and members of the community, all of whom can play an important support role in the individual’s efforts to move forward.

Today’s Discussion with Employers Discussion Topics for Employers: Why are you willing to hire ex-offenders?  What attributes or characteristics do you look for?  What are the biggest challenges you face in hiring and retaining ex-offenders in your business? What supports or services provided by training programs or community organizations have been most beneficial to you? What advice do you have for training providers who are trying to approach a new employer about hiring a person with a criminal history? How should ex-offenders present their criminal background to employers? Other Topic or Question?
