Presentation transcript:

List some of the aspects of a totalitarian regime. BR #1:Monday, Feb. 6 List some of the aspects of a totalitarian regime. Who is an example of a totalitarian leader? Did you know: In 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. During her 8-day mission she worked with U.S. and Japanese researchers, and was a co-investigator on a bone cell experiment.

BR #2:Tuesday, Feb. 7 What did the followers of Mussolini call themselves? What event led Hitler to follow proper channels to take control of Germany? What ideas did Hitler outline in Mein Kampf? Did you know: In 1967, Richard Loving, a white man, and Mildred Jeter, a Black woman, were married in the District of Columbia. When they returned home to Virginia, they were arrested and convicted of violating the state’s anti-miscegenation law. They each faced a year in jail and their case went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court found in favor of the Lovings in the famous trial Loving v. Virginia. They ruled that prohibiting interracial marriage on state and local levels was unconstitutional; this meant that marriages between the races were legal in the country for the first time since 1664.

What and when was Kristallnacht? Explain Nuremburg laws. BR #3:Wednesday, Feb. 8 What and when was Kristallnacht? Explain Nuremburg laws. Did you know: The media made the Black Panthers notorious for their Afros, dark apparel, and willingness for armed self-defense, but their manifesto for change launched programs that benefited black communities nationwide, like free dental care, breakfast for low-income children, even drama classes.

BR #4:Thursday, Feb. 9 After reading all of the documents, do you think appeasement was the best policy? Defend your answer. Did you know: Although Adolf Hitler intended the 1936 Berlin Games to be a showcase for the Nazi ideology of Aryan racial supremacy, it was a black man who left the biggest imprint on that year’s Games. In one of the greatest performances in Olympic history, Jesse Owens captured gold in the 100 meters, long jump, 200 meters and 4×100 meter relay, a feat that would not be matched until American Carl Lewis did the same at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

BR #5: Friday, Feb. 10 When did WWII begin and why? What is blitzkrieg? What territory did Japan invade in 1931? Did you know: George Washington Carver taught a groundbreaking crop rotation method. The South badly needed the new agricultural technique. The land was worn out by cotton growing because cotton drains the soil of its nutrients. Carver advised planting cotton one year, then soil-enriching peanuts or sweet potatoes the next. Southern farmers followed his lead to great success, yielding peanut surpluses that many used to feed livestock. Carver also famously developed more than 300 uses for peanuts, from ink to hand lotion to cooking oil. While the common myth that he invented peanut butter is untrue, he did help popularize the food. Even President Theodore Roosevelt asked for Carver's advice on agricultural matters. Before turning in: Please put the following in the upper RIGHT-hand corner of your paper: First and last name Class period Date Once complete, please turn in all 5 bell ringers for this week.
