National 4 Course German Torry Academy
The course provides learners with the opportunities to develop skills in Reading, Listening, Talking and Writing enhance their enjoyment and understanding of their own and other cultures develop understanding about how language works use different media effectively for learning and communication use language to communicate ideas and information.
The course is made of 3 units 1) Understanding language – learners will develop the skills of Reading and listening 2) Using Language – practising the skills of Talking and Writing 3) The Added Value Unit – a project style unit on a particular topic
When should pupils take the course? Pupils would be expected to be ‘Secure’ in the Third Level Modern Languages Experiences and Outcomes and ‘Developing’ or ‘Consolidating’ in the Fourth Level E’s and O’s.
Assessments All units are internally assessed pass / fail with SQA verification and Quality Assurance Evidence of Reading. Listening, Talking and Writing skills will be retained from class work the Added Value Unit will require evidence of these skills having been applied to a chosen topic in assignment or project form On completion of a National 4 exam, pupils may wish to go on to study German at National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher level in S5 and S6. Homework will be given on a regular basis YOU WILL BE ASKED TO… learn vocabulary prepare for speaking tasks do short reading questions and research information for project and background work access the online materials available to reinforce class work and gain as much exposure to the Foreign Language as possible.
World of Work/Career: Our students will enter a workplace in which they will compete for employment with young people from the E.U. and elsewhere who speak English in addition to their own language. Monolingual students will be at a distinct disadvantage. Because language learners learn to deal with unfamiliar cultural ideas, they are much better equipped to adapt and cope in a fast- changing world. They also learn to effectively handle new situations.
