3.4 Betrayal and arrest What is the meaning of the betrayal and arrest of Jesus in Gethsemane Why was Jesus betrayed here? Why is the arrest important to Christians? What are the attitudes towards Judas today?

Betrayal and arrest Read page 70 How does Jesus explain the method and place of his arrest? How does Mark present Judas? (Mark’s view of Judas) What are all the possible explanations for Judas’ betrayal? (at least 4) Choose which theory you prefer and argue for it (as if it was a court case) What can Christians learn from the account of the arrest of Jesus (8) Which parts of the arrest cause problems for Christians today? (8) bullet point Who may the naked man have been? List as many ways as you can that the disciples have failed in Mark’s gospel If it was Judas’ destiny to betray Jesus then why might this be a problem for Christians today?

What can Christians learn from the account of the arrest of Jesus Proves Jesus was the Messiah- fulfils prophecy Encouraging- disciples fail but are forgiven later on Jesus in control- chose the garden Authorities threatened, misunderstand, act illegally to arrest him- Jesus is innocent

Which parts of the arrest cause problems for Christians today Which parts of the arrest cause problems for Christians today? (8) bullet point Peter has a sword. He has misunderstood Jesus again- Should we trust someone who failed so much If Jesus used Judas to complete his mission- He is causing him to go to hell We don’t understand Judas’ motives Why did Jesus choose a follower who would betray him

Matthew- Judas specifically asks for a reward in return for helping the priests. Mark- no motive but money mentioned Luke- Satan entered into Judas and that led him to go to the priests. John- not only does Satan enter into Judas5 we are also told that Judas was a thief who stole from the Apostles.6 However, John makes no specific mention of Judas getting any money from the priests.
