RESOURCES Natural vs. Man-Made

Types of Resources Natural Resources Man-Made Resources Materials that are naturally found in the environment Can be living or nonliving Materials that are NOT naturally found in the environment Also known as “synthetic” resources

Renewable vs. Nonrenewable NATURAL RESOURCES Renewable vs. Nonrenewable

Natural Resources Renewable Nonrenewable Can be living or nonliving Materials that are naturally found in the environment Not the result of human creation

Definitions: Renewable Nonrenewable Resources that CAN be replaced or refilled by natural processes. Resources that CANNOT be replaced or refilled by natural processes.

Examples: Renewable Nonrenewable Water Sunlight Minerals Plants Metals Animals Wind Rocks Minerals Metals Fossil fuels: coal, oil, natural gas

Fossil Fuels: Nonrenewable Resources created from the remains of once-living organisms from hundreds of millions of years ago.

Amount: Renewable Nonrenewable Theoretically, there is an “unlimited” amount of these resources There is a limited amount of nonrenewable resources - once used up, are forever gone.

IMPORTANT! Renewable Renewable resources can become nonrenewable resources if they are used up faster than they can be replaced.
