Getting Started with DOIs in the Institutional Repository Jeffrey M. Mortimore, Georgia Southern University Ashley D. Lowery, East Tennessee State University ALA Midwinter 2017
Why Add DOIs? Extends reach of IR content Provides legitimacy to repository materials DOIs aid connections with third-party platforms
Case Study: Georgia Southern Journals Added DOIs to 5+ Journals in Digital Commons@Georgia Southern Established Crossref Membership $275.00 annual fee + $0.10 — $1.00 per article-level DOI Developed and signed MOUs Membership relationship Proxy authority (LOC and Crossref) Responsibilities in case MOU is terminated Developed DOI suffix patterns (10.1115/ijhm.2015.020201)
DOI Workflow – Overview Generate article-level DOIs Publish DOIs in the IR Deposit DOIs in Crossref Test DOI Resolution Publish DOI References Deposit DOIs within 24 hours of publishing!
DOI Workflow – Generate & Publish DOIs in the IR Input the information for an issue into the Journal DOI Generator in Excel: Publish the DOIs on journal website.
DOI Workflow – Deposit DOIs in Crossref Once article DOIs are published, deposit the DOIs with Crossref within 24 hours! Two methods for deposit: Manual deposit via the webDeposit form (http://www.crossref.org/webDeposit/). Labor-intensive but less technically demanding Only specific content types are supported Automated deposit via XML upload. More technically demanding but fast Requires XSLT transformation of OAI-PMH XML to Crossref XML
DOI Workflow – Test DOI Resolution As simple as clicking on a DOI URL to see if it resolves… Once deposited, DOI link should resolve to target resolution page for article.
DOI Workflow – Publish DOI References Required to upload reference list with DOIs Upload supplementary documents for published articles Request new submissions to include DOIs Find DOIs for reference articles using Simple Text query form (http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/)
Lessons Learned Develop your DOI syntax to accommodate the full range or resources for which you are likely to deposit DOIs. Secure the MOU and DOI syntax before depositing. You don’t need a journal-level DOI to publish article-level DOIs. However, the journal does need to have an ISSN. Publish DOIs to DC before depositing with Crossref. However, Crossref is watching, so deposit ASAP! Every format will require unique XSL to transform; however, the online form is reliable and hand-coded XML uploads just fine, too. Crossref provides a sandbox server with which to test your XML prior to uploading.
