Spanish Missions in Georgia Describe the impact of the Spanish mission in Georgia

Where were they located?

When were they found in Georgia? 1568 – 1684. The Spanish will start building missions along the coast after the French will build a fort near modern day Jacksonville Florida. The Spanish will see the French and the British as a threat so they will want to keep them out.

What were the Spanish Missions What were the Spanish Missions? Based on the pictures what do you think they are?

What were the Spanish Missions continued Churches the Spanish built to convert the natives to the Catholic religion. The Priest (friars) taught the Native Americans their religion, their language and new customs. However the Missions were also used for other purposes beside teaching the Catholic religion. What do you think the other purpose will be?

Why were they created? The Spanish wanted to keep control of the coast line. They had discovered the Gulf Stream. What is the importance of the Gulf Stream? The Gulf Stream allowed their ships to shave off 1 – 2 weeks off of a voyage. This will protect the Spanish shipping and trade routes. So in addition to sending Priests to live in the missions, the Spanish also sent soldiers. What was the purpose of the soldiers?

What was the real purpose of the missions? R – Spread their Religion L – Teach them their Language and Customs T – Protect their Trade routes and Teach new jobs/roles. They will make the Native Americans serve as workers (slaves/servants)

How did the Spanish solve the French problem? The French built a fort near Modern Day Jacksonville, Florida and claimed the land. Pedro Menendez was sent by the King/Queen of Spain to remove the French threat. He and his men killed over 200 Frenchmen causing the French to abandon the fort. To keep the land for Spain, the Spanish started setting up Spanish Missions along the southeast coast.

Was there any violence between the Spanish and the Natives? Yes, we will read the speech of Juanillo. What do you think will happen?
