Millennium Development Goals At the beginning of the century, around 200 nations came together to set and adopt eight goals for development, known as the millennium development goals. This represented a historic global commitment as it was the first time that so many governments and global institutions came together to pledge their commitment to tackling poverty. Each of these goals was an international target for reducing global poverty, ranging from addressing hunger to environmental sustainability. The target to reach the Millennium Development Goals was 2015.

Global Goals In September 2015, World Leaders committed to 17 Global Goals to achieve 3 extraordinary things in the next 15 years (2016-2030).  End extreme poverty. Fight inequality & injustice. Fix climate change.  All ICS projects help to fight poverty and contribute to the delivery of the Global Goals. Themes covered are in line with these goals. Volunteers tackle issues by doing a range of activities such as: • Surveying community development needs • Running health and hygiene workshops or training sessions with local communities • Assisting in livelihood generation

International Citizen Service (ICS) ICS is a development programme It brings together young people from the UK and developing countries to volunteer in some of the poorest communities It is funded by UK Government ICS is funded by the UK government to encourage more young people to get involved in community and international development. Mention the team structure – team of 12, half UK volunteers and half international volunteers from the country you have been placed in to allow cross cultural learnings. And you will be facilitated by 2 team leaders – one from the UK and one from your host country. 4

International Citizen Service (ICS) ICS aims to bring about three things: Project impact Volunteer personal development Creation of active citizens There are three main outcomes of the ICS programme called the “Three legged stool”: - To fight global poverty alongside the local community that you have been allocated to. - Your own personal development through learning from each other, for example, teamwork and communication. - Make a difference on your return – we hope that you feel really inspired about what you experienced on an ICS placement that you want to get involved in community issues in your local area or that you want to increase awareness of global issues. When can I go? Tanzania 26 September – 16 December 2017 (12 weeks) Nepal 27 September – 19 December 2017 (12 weeks) 28 September – 20 December 2017 (12 weeks) Nicaragua 28 September– 20 December 2017 (12 weeks) Outward and return flights are booked by Raleigh, and volunteers travel together.

Training – UK and overseas Training is an essential part of the ICS journey You’ll learn to contribute to ICS projects effectively and understand how they support wider development work International volunteers also receive training Things you will cover at training what you will be doing in country cultural awareness international development practical advice about going away great opportunity to meet people that you will be going on placement with International volunteers who you will be living and working with will also go through exactly the same process – selection and training. You will then train together as a large group in country. TIPS: The more reading you do around the country you will be going to the better. Learn language, don’t have to be fluent but shows you have made effort.

Livelihoods

Who will I be supporting? Women and young entrepreneurs creating sustainable local enterprises Local shops Tailors Bakeries Carpenters Dairy value chain: Animal feed Milk production Dairy products Artificial insemination Transportation You will be supporting women and young entrepreneurs to develop the skills, knowledge and motivation to start up a new small-scale business, or expand an existing one. Most entrepreneurs will be setting up their ideas from scratch but you could be working with some existing entrepreneurs. We are working in partnership with East African Dairy Development (EADD) and working with people to develop businesses within the dairy value chain, such as selling animal feed, producing milk or dairy products. Or outside of the dairy value chain, such as chicken farms, local shops and services – eg. tailors or restaurants.

Life on placement You will be living with a host family, usually with your fellow in-country volunteer. Action at Home Around one month after your return, you will be invited to the 4th stage of the programme – a returned volunteer event that lasts for 1 day. What is Action at Home? Your project must meet at least two of the Active Citizen Goals: Youth led Engages others Create a positive long-lasting change Involve a UK community Purpose of the ICS programme is to create long term change. We hope you feel that you want to continue getting involved in community issues in your local community, or maybe you want to spread awareness about international development issues that you witnessed on your placement. IMPORTANT: promote the RV! It’s a great chance to catch up with people you met on placement, hear other stories from different countries and projects. Much easier to do you’re A@H after RV. A@H You must complete one or more projects within three months after last returned volunteer event You could aim to: Raise awareness of development issues Create links between people in the UK and people in developing countries And inspire others to do positive social action
