Presentation transcript:

Ceramics & Surrealism Students will learn about three clay hand building techniques. Students will learn about Salvador Dali & Surrealism. Students will create a clay container. “To sculpt is to shape a form into your vision.”

“Hand building” is working with clay by hand using only simple tools. Before potters had the wheel, they were creating beautiful pots with these various techniques.

Three Hand building techniques: Coil Pinch Pot Slab

What is the COIL Method used for? Coils of clay can be used to build bowls, vases and other forms in various shapes and sizes.

How do I make a coil? Keeping the fingers flat, the clay is formed into rope like shapes from ¼” to ½” thick.

How do I connect the coils? In order to connect coils to create a structure, make sure they are wet and add texture to ensure connection.

Pinch Pot Technique Begin with a lump of clay and smooth it into a sphere that fits the size of the hand. Press the thumb into the center of the ball and dampen with a sponge to revolve the ball to be even.

Slab construction Slab construction is when an artist works with flat pieces of clay. Usually the slabs are ¼”-1” thick.

How do you connect the slabs? Slip & Score: Add water and texture.

Now that you have learned about the new art techniques… Let’s talk about the Art Historical References….

SURREALISM Surrealism is a style of art that began in France in the early 1920’s. Artists created paintings of real objects & people in unrealistic situations/combinations. They also attempted to express the subconscious and dream world!

SALVADOR DALI Salvador Dali was a prominent Surrealist painter and sculptor from Spain who created many masterpieces.

The Meditative Rose, 1958

Space elephant sculpture 1980 Bronze sculpture Spain, China, London 23 ft

The Lobster Telephone, 1936

Mae West Lips Sofa, 1937

Now its time to create your own surreal animal container!

FIRST STEP: Brainstorm THIRD STEP: Clay hand building SECOND STEP: Sketch THIRD STEP: Clay hand building Brainstorm questions to answer in your sketchbook: What animal or animals will be my inspirations? What type of hand building techniques will I need to use? What do I need to do step by step? How will this link to Surrealism? Sketch some ideas. Show Ms Masic your sketches & notes/ get approval to start with clay!

The End.
