American College of Physicians - Who we are ACP is a diverse community of internal medicine specialists and subspecialists united by a commitment to excellence. ACP members rely on ACP for world-class education, standard-setting, and the sharing of knowledge to advance the science and practice of internal medicine. Improving lives.” The emphasis of this slide is several fold – ACP is more than simply a place to come to get products and services. Rather, ACP is a community of internists, who share their expertise and experiences to advance the profession and healthcare as a whole. ACP membership represents a diversity of ethnicities, gender, ages, work settings, lifestyles, and careers (academics, clinicians, researchers, policy advisors, etc.). Our common bond is our commitment to excel in delivering the best care possible to our patients.

ACP supports what internists value ACP was referred to in a May 2015 article in The Lancet as the “conscience of the medical profession”. ACP and its members are focused first and foremost on improving patient care. ACP members are working to effect change and shape the future of the profession. ACP members are helping one another sustain their passion for medicine during a period of unprecedented change. In comparison - the primary goal of some physician organizations (unnamed) is to address issues that benefit their physician members, not necessarily to benefit patients. Bullet 3 – ACP is an increasingly influential organization due to our rigorous and thoughtful clinical and public policy development process. And our focus on improving patient care and outcomes. ACP’s advocacy goes beyond DC and the state houses. ACP advocates for change with ABIM, payors, EHR developers, the Residency Review Committee, and other important organizations whose policies and services impact medicine. Bullet 4 – Retaining the joy for medicine is a key theme for ACP. ACP members in all stages of their careers share how they thrive during this period of unprecedented change. ACP’s “Improving lives” tagline refers to physician lives as well as patients.

ACP early career internists ACP defines early career internists as physicians who are 16 or fewer years out of medical school (e.g. graduated from medical school in 1999 or later). Approximately 22,000 ACP members are considered early career internists. Early career internists represent 20% of ACP’s total physician membership. Speaker notes: Note that the number 22,000 does not include internists who are still in training in residency and fellowship programs. FYI – approximately 24,000 ACP members are in residency and fellowship training programs.

ACP Clinical Recommendations ACP provides three types of clinical recommendations Clinical Practice Guidelines – based on best available evidence Clinical Guidance Statements – when there is no conclusive evidence Best Practice Advice Speaker notes: ACP’s clinical recommendations follow a rigorous, multistep process that includes a systematic review and deliberation of the evidence, evidence grading, and the development of summary recommendations. ACP provides three types of clinical recommendations to help clinicians deliver the best health care possible. Cite the three bullet points on the slide. ACP is significantly expanding and realigning its guidelines development program to ensure that they continue to meet the standards for the Institute of Medicine and the Guidelines International Network. Guideline topics will be selected to ensure that ACP maintains a core set of current guidelines for internal medicine. And - ACP guidelines will be updated more frequently as new evidence from the literature is identified. All of ACP’s clinical guidelines are published in Annals.

Meet ABIM’s MOC requirements Understand the ABIM MOC process Earn Medical Knowledge and Practice Assessment MOC points through ACP Prepare for the MOC exam – MKSAP 17, MOC exam prep via live courses and recordings Speaker notes: Certainly one of the most important professional development needs is to maintain your certification and license to practice. Before I go further though , a disclaimer - note that ACP has stipulated that ABIM recertification should not be a requirement for licensure nor should it be a prerequisite for hospital admitting privileges. Having said that – ACP does provide a variety of resources to ease the burden of MOC. For those not yet enrolled in the MOC process - I recommend that you check out ACP’s MOC Navigator tool. It will guide you through the MOC process and provide specific options for meeting your MOC requirements and for preparing for the MOC exam. For those already enrolled in MOC – ACP provides a number of products and programs for you to earn MOC points. Especially noteworthy is MKSAP 17, for which you can earn up to 200 MOC points. In addition, ACP offers live and recorded courses to help you prepare for the MOC exam.

ACP Leadership Academy Prepare yourself for a leadership role in your organization and in the greater healthcare environment ACP in partnership with the American Association for Physician Leadership Courses on strategic thinking, financial decision-making, managing physician performance, marketing, ethics, and more Live meetings, faculty-led online courses and self-study modules, free Webinars Earn CME and credit towards advanced degrees in medical management. Speaker notes: A relatively new program started in 2014 under the direction of ACP’s Council for Early Career Physicians. ACP is working with the American Association for Physician Leadership (formerly the American College of Physician Executives) and has customized a leadership program for internists. ACP members can select from a range of physician leadership topics identified as “core” by ACP and AAPL. Members can self-select one or more courses based on their interests and needs, or they can work towards an AAPL certification in Physician Leadership. Most courses provide CME and many the courses can be credited towards advanced degrees with a number of affiliated universities. The courses are offered in a variety of face-to-face and distance learning formats.

ACP Fellowship Credential - FACP ACP Fellowship represents the pinnacle of integrity, professionalism, and scholarship for those who aspire to careers in Internal Medicine FACP is a distinction earned from physician colleagues who recognize the accomplishments and achievements of internists who have made significant contributions to medicine and the broader community. A minimum of two years of ACP Membership is required to qualify for Fellowship. FACP membership dues are the same as for an ACP Member. Speaker notes: ACP Fellowship – FACP – has long been a coveted credential. Recognition by physician colleagues is both humbling and satisfying. Many of you are closer than you think to achieving ACP Fellowship based on the contribution that you’ve already made within your practices and your communities.
