How do Protists Eat? Vocabulary  Autotrophs: An organism that can produce its own food using, light, water, carbon dioxide or other chemicals.  Heterotrophs:
Cellular Processes. Cellular Respiration The process by which the mitochondria take in oxygen to break down glucose (food) to produce energy (ATP), CO.
Photosynthesis Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce their food in the presence of sunlight, water, carbon dioxide, and chlorophyll.

A Powerpoint Presentation by: The Euglena A Powerpoint Presentation by: Jameson McNamee Isabelle Call Jazlynn Bohlen

Looks Though the Euglena isn't the prettiest creature out there but hey it’s a single celled organism that you can only see under a microscope what do except. Here are a couple pictures to see how the Euglena looks

Movement The Euglena moves by a whip like structure that acts like a little motor called a flagellum (flagella) is the plural form The flagellum is located on the anterior (front) end

Respiration The Euglena breathes just like all other protozoa by taking in oxygen through the cell membrane After it inhales it takes the oxygen and transforms it in to carbon dioxide Then just like in inhales it exhales bye sending the transformed carbon dioxide out of the cell membrane

Senses To see it contains an eyespot, a permative organelle that filters sunlight into the light detecting photo sensitive structures at the base of the flagellum The Euglena like a said is a very simple organism and that’s why its only sense is sight. As its all it needs. Fun Fact: the Euglena can see in the day and night! Cool!

Growth Reproduction of the Euglena begins with the mitosis of the cell nucleus followed by the division of the cell itself Read more about mitosis in the reproduction slide.

Reproduction The Reproduction of the Euglena is the same as most single celled organisms like the Amoeba The Euglena reproduces asexually through binary fission (a form of cell division) Reproduction of the Euglena begins with the mitosis of the cell nucleus followed by the division of the cell itself The sexual reproduction of the Euglena is unknown.

Excretion The Euglena excretes by pumping excess water out of a contract The vacuole absorbs all of the waste , when its full it expellees the waste through a pore in the chloroplast witch can be opened and closed

Eating The Euglena eats by using its chloroplasts to absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide in a process called photosynthesis. In photosynthesis the organism absorbs sunlight and carbon dioxide and then makes it into glucose sugar that it then eats If there is no or not enough sunlight it absorbs nutrients from decayed organic material
