Topic: Equal Rights Amendment American History Topic: Equal Rights Amendment Learning Goal: Students will be able to list 2 pros and 2 cons of a potential Equal Rights Amendment

Equal Rights Amendment Nickname = ERA first proposed in 1923 (written by Alice Paul) to affirm that women and men have equal rights under the law not part of the U.S. Constitution.

ERA as Law? The ERA was passed out of Congress in 1972 and has been ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states. When three more states vote yes, it is possible that the ERA could become the 28th Amendment.

Brainstorm With a neighbor, make a T Chart and list pros and cons of an equal rights amendment

Equality Women have historically been guaranteed fewer rights than men Would provide a fundamental legal remedy against sex discrimination for both women and men. Equality can be achieved by raising women’s legal rights to the same level of constitutional protection as men’s if this passes…right?

Female Cases/Laws Roe v. Wade Griswold v. Connecticut Title 9 – known as Equal Opportunity in Education Act  best known for high school/college sports No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance...

Pick 1 of the following 2 questions to answer: A) Explain why some females would not want an ERA passed B) Would you vote yes for the ERA? Why?
