Anxiety is… normal unpleasant so that we take notice and keep safe a response in both the mind and the body

Fight or flight physiology Blood needed in arms and legs Away from surface Pale face Need this fast Heart speeds up Palpitations Conserve energy by stopping non-essential processes Digestion slows down or stops Feels sick

Automatic thoughts Everyone has anxious and automatic thoughts. Panic attacks increased heart rate sweating, trembling, shaking choking feeling, shortness of breath chest pain, discomfort nausea feeling dizzy, light-headed, faint fear of dying tingling in extremities - carpal-pedal spasm detachment from oneself and surroundings

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) People who suffer OCD commonly experience distressing and repetitive thoughts. These thoughts are automatic and appear even when they try and resist. These thoughts lead to compulsions. These are behaviours to someone display to reduce or stop the thoughts: for example, handwashing. Common obsessions include: fear of contamination fear of causing harm fear of behaving obsessively need for symmetry/exactness
