Chapter 2: self and perception Think of the difference between perception and perspective!

Period 3 pp. 41-48 Biggest takeaways from “Communication and the Self” If other people call you a failure, you will begin to think you are a failure. Your self esteem and how others see you affects your communication How you perceive yourself affects your communication Past experiences shape how we are viewed and how we respond to others. Self concept: how you perceive yourself – takes time to develop The people who surround you help shape who you are. This has affects your communication. Your expectations dictate your behavior (self-fulfilling prophecy) Your own expectations influence your own behavior Someone’s expectations influence other people’s behavior

Period 4 pp. 41-48 Biggest takeaways from “Communication and the Self” Our lives are greatly shaped by a number of things around us. Self-fulfilling prophecy: Expectations of an outcome with behaviors that will help lead to that outcome. Self concept: how you define yourself, and what you think makes you similar or different to others. How you view yourself affects your communication.

Period 6 pp. 41-48 Biggest takeaways from “Communication and the Self” Self-concept: a conception of what is unique about us. How we see ourselves. Personality: the characteristic ways that we think and behave across a variety of situations. Biology can account for as much as half of our communicated personality traits. Self-fulfilling prophecy: Can be positive or negative. “I’m going to do bad on this test.” You believe it, so you do bad on the test. “I’m going to get better.” You believe it, act on it, and get better. Our identity comes from our interaction with others, and how we think they view us.

Period 3 pp. 48-62 “Perceiving Others” Empathy vs. Sympathy. Empathy is when you can see and feel from another person’s viewpoint because you have actually been there yourself. Sympathy is different. You feel for them, but you don’t actually know what they are going through because you haven’t been through it yourself. 3 ways we perceive others: Selection, organization, interpretation (this plays a role in virtually all forms of communication) First impressions are crucial. Negative things we see highly shape our opinions of others.

Period 4 pp. 48-62 Relationships (all types) influence our perception and our communication. Gender and occupation affects our perception and how others view us. How we act and communicate varies based on our lives Dimensions of empathy: perspective (taking on the viewpoint of another person), emotional (allowing you to experience other’s feelings, concern (caring about the welfare of others)

Period 6 pp. 48-62 Three steps of perception: Selection (we are selective as to what choose to allow to shape our perception). Organization (we arrange information in meaningful ways in order to make sense of the world). Interpretation (once we have selected and organized, we interpret in order to make sense). Attribution: the process of attaching meaning to behavior. We see someone behaving, and we infer how they are feeling. Narratives: the personal stories that we and others create in order to make sense of the world. *Differing narratives of the world can lead to problematic communication. Identity Management: having multiple roles or “hats” we put on whenever the situation calls for it. Empathy vs. Sympathy. Empathy is when you can see and feel from another person’s viewpoint because you have actually been there yourself. Sympathy is different. You feel for them, but you don’t actually know what they are going through because you haven’t been through it yourself.

Period 4 pp. 62-70 Self-Perception vs. How others perceive us (These can be completely different (duh)) Realization of our actions can occur through communication (we think we sound a certain way, but we are surprised to find out how we actually sound) We are self-aware to an extent that we try to shape others, or we are secure enough to where we leave others to their own Social media allows us the time to shape our “selves” “All human beings have three lives: public, private, and secret.” The last one is what defines us.

Period 6 pp. 62-70 Identity Management: Communication strategies that people use to shape how people see them. This happens both consciously and sub-consciously. Perceived self vs. Presenting Self. Perceived self is what we actually think of ourselves, but we don’t share. The presenting self is the image we project. People differ in how much they can manage their identity. Those that are able to wear more “hats” will be better communicators.
