Executive Editor: Vote NAC nominates Alexander Barg to be next Ex-Ed for 1/1/2017-30/6/2018 Bio A. Barg received an undergraduate degree in applied mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, the latter from the Institute for Information Transmission Problems (IPPI) Moscow, Russia, in 1987. He has been a Senior Researcher at the IPPI since 1988. During 1997-2002 he worked in Math Research Center of Bell Labs. Since 2003 he has been a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Institute for Systems Research, University of Maryland, College Park, with affiliate appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics. A. Barg's research interests are in coding theory, information theory, signal processing and algebraic combinatorics. He has worked on problems related to error exponents, digital fingerprinting, linear coding for ordered metrics, as well as to association schemes and few-distance sets in metric spaces. His most recent research is on coding problems for distributed storage. From 1997-2000, he was Associate Editor for Coding Theory of the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. He was the Technical Program Co-Chair of the 2006 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory and of the 2010 and 2015 IEEE ITWs, and has organized several other conferences and workshops. He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of Problems of Information Transmission, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, and Advances in Mathematics of Communications. He is an IEEE Fellow and received the 2015 Information Theory Society Paper Award for his work with Itzhak Tamo on coding for distributed storage.
