Cockney — one of the most famous types of the London vernacular, called as scornful nickname of natives Londoners from the middle and lower segments of its population.

In accordance with legend, a true Cockney is a Londoner born within earshot of the bells of the Church of St. Mary-Le-bow (sound of them is heard at a distance of not more than five miles from the Church).

Who are the "Cockney"? Cockney slang has appeared in the 1840-ies among the Londoners of the East End, having scornful nickname “Cockney”. Usually it was the lower strata of English society, the inhabitants of the slums: workers, street vendors, crafters, petty thieves and crooks.

Remarkable festive outfits and still wear some Cockney — hats with colorful feathers, dresses and suits, embroidered with pearl buttons; for this they are called "Рearly Kings and Queens" .

In 1912 Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw wrote the play "Pygmalion", the story that plays on the pronunciation of English from different walks of life.

What is the Cockney dialect? For the Cockney dialect characterize special pronunciation and distorted grammar. Here are just some examples: - skipping of the sound [h] - "not 'alf" instead of "not half" - use "ain't" instead of "isn't", "am not" - pronunciation of the sound [ɵ] and [ð] as [f] and [v] - "faas'nd" instead of "thousand" and "bover" instead of "bother"). - the use of seen and done instead of did and saw - double negatives – "I ain't done nufing!"

- the transformation [aʊ] to [æː], for example, "down" pronounced as [dæːn]. - Use removenode slang. For example, "feet" is "plates of meat" instead of "head" is "loaf of bread"; sometimes these phrases are reduced, forming a new word, "loaf" instead of "loaf of bread". - using the glottal stop instead of [t] between vowels or stands (if the second of them drums): bottle = "Bo l". - use instead of [r] labiodental-dental [ʋʋ], on ear reminiscent of [w]. ("Weally" instead of "really") - L-vocalization (eng.)Russian. (the pronunciation of "dark" l as a vowel): as Millwall [mɪowɔː] "myoo". - skipping of the sound [t] at the end of a word, example: [ʃui] instead of [ʃaɪt].

"Classic" Cockney’s rhyming slang Propose to get acquainted with the ten most famous examples of Cockney slang, is well known to every Briton. Some of them appeared already in the twentieth century. Please note that in the rhyming phrase, the second word is often omitted. 1. Apples and pears (Яблоки и груши) = Stairs (лестница) Example: I'm just going down the apples to get a cup of tea from the kitchen.

2. Adam and Eve (Адам и Ева) = Believe (верить, поверить) Example: Would you Adam and Eve it? 3. Dog and bone (Собака и кость) = Phone (телефон) Example:  One sec mate, my dog’s ringing, just gonna take this call!

4. Butcher’s hook (Крюк мясника) = Look (взгляд) Example: I had a butchers at it through the window. 5. Porky pies (Пирожки со свининой) = Lies (ложь) Example: He is full of porky pies!

7. Loaf of bread (Буханка хлеба) = Head (голова) Example: Use your loaf! Think!

8. Baked bean (Печёная фасоль) = Queen (королева) Example: Look who’s on TV, it’s the baked bean! 9. Trouble and strife (Беда и раздор) = Wife (жена) I had an argument with the trouble and strife last night. 10. Ruby Murray (Руби Мюррей, знаменитая певица 50-х годов XX в.) = Curry (карри) Example: "Let's go for a few pints then a Ruby"

In Britain still have a brand-new rhymes and expressions in the style of Cockney, and the geography of their use is no longer restricted to London's East End (for example, Wind and Kite = Website). This means that rhyming slang is alive and continues its evolution.
