STUDY SMART Prepare for Midterms with less stress!

Know your Learning Style Time Management Get Organized Study Tools Reduce Stress Multiple Choice Tips

Time Management Set goals for studying each night #1 in Reducing Stress

NO Distractions Put away the cell phone Turn off iPod Turn off the TV Close your door

Study in Short Burst Best to study in 15-20 minute increments Break for 5 minutes, then come BACK DO NOT Look at phone Get on the computer Turn on the TV Play and video game

Be ACTIVE, Not Passive Just reading…or staring at your book/notes is not going to work! Engage your mind Active Reading Stop every 5 lines Can you summarize what you just read? Can you give an example? How does that passage relate to the last one?

Think of your LEARNING STYLE Auditory Visual Kinesthetic Tape record notes Rewrite Notes Role Play your Notes Listen to soft music Write Key Points from book Movement is KEY – try pacing while you study Have a partner to explain the material Create Graphic Organizers Add motions to topics or vocabulary words to help you remember them Draw Pictures of the material. Put it in a cartoon.

Get ORGANIZED! Be sure to have all your materials at hand. Pens Paper Note Cards Highlighters Have a logical Organization of your binder Keep all similar topics together Use dividers/labels to easily find each unit topic

Study Tools Make Note Cards Use Post-It Notes Make Vocabulary Flip Sheets (term/definition) Make a comprehensive Study Sheet Take Practice test in the book Explain the notes to a friend/stuffed animal Create mnemonics/songs/rhymes/charts/pictures Rewrite Notes

Study Tools Continued Make a study Group – go through and explain each unit Have someone quiz you (mom/dad/sibling/friend in your study group) Read notes into a tape recorder and listen to them Draw it out on a White Board Highlight your notes Go over old test and quizes

Reduce STRESS Stress reduction may include: Dance, walking, yoga, meditation These things work because they engage different parts of the brain and use focus and breathing to moderate the effects of stress on the body. Sports, visual arts, instrumental music Talking to a friend, reading, writing, in a journal, may also help. STOP PROCRASTINATING!

Stress Reduction is NOT… Watching TV Playing computer games Checking E-mail Face booking

DON’T Cram Start Early With a plan Set goals (short term and long term) Reward Yourself Review EACH NIGHT! Repetition is Key!

Multiple Choice Question Tips Read the WHOLE question! Read ALL answer choices Circle any words in a question that you don’t know – then use context clues to help you. Eliminate Choice you know are wrong A B C D

Multiple Choice Question Tips Cover the answer choices – read the question and try to answer Read the question and fill in with each answer choice – which one sounds right? Give each answer the True/False test Look alike options – find the one answer that is different from the others.

Multiple Choice Question Tips Double Negatives Except, NOT – check off the positive statements to see what is left. Echo Options – if two options are opposites –likely one of them is the correct answer If two answers seem correct – compare them for differences Use cues from other questions to help

Multiple Choice Question Tips Answer easy questions first and come back to harder ones – remember that they have the same point value! Always guess when there is no penalty for a wrong answer. Remember to find the BEST answer Only change your first choice if you find clues in another question or you are ABSOLUTLY sure.
